Solid collection heavily influenced by the minimalism trend of the mid nineties. It reminds me of the Calvin Klein/Kate Moss era. A well constructed and very wearable collection with light colours accented with soft sequin and beading details. And the slicked back hair and simple makeup really let the clothes speak for themselves. See more looks below.
My friends are back! I haven’t been this excited about a September cover (in this case multiple covers) in years. Interview magazine’s September issue is a tribute to models and features some of the most legendary supermodels of all time. In a spread called “The Originals”, the girls many of us idolized in the 90s prove once again what made them famous in the first place. Not only are many of these supermodels incredible models, they have personality that comes through in their photos. These are the models we knew on a first name basis in the 90s – they were all friends, partied together, covered gossip magazine covers and dated and married movie stars, musicians and billionaires. The actual interviews themselves sound pretty juicy too as they open up about the start of their careers and their rise to the top of the fashion industry.
I think I might buy each issue and put the all the covers on my wall – in my own personal tribute to my junior high locker – because it was constantly covered in photos featuring these beautiful women.

Fifteen years after her last Versace runway appearance Naomi stuns as she opened Paris Fashion week the Atelier Versace A/W 2013 show in Paris on Sunday. She strutted down the runway like she hasn’t missed a beat. Naomi has long been associated with the brand and was a close friend of Gianni Versace’s so it was super cool to see her in a Versace show again after so many years. It reminded us all of the great Versace shows of the early 90s. At 43, Naomi continues to be one of the busiest of all the original supermodels.
This week it was also announced that Christy Turlington stars in the two major fall campaigns – Prada and Jason Wu, not to mention reprising her role as a Calvin Klein underwear model. The photos were recently released and she looks incredible. Both Cindy Crawford and Grace Coddington have said that Christy Turlington is the most beautiful women they’ve ever seen. Her face is pretty much perfection. In fact, Christy’s face inspired the faces of the mannequins at the Met’s Costume Institute – you know you’re gorgeous when…And Christy is a true activist and does a lot a great work with her charity Every Mother Counts.
I’ve always loved Cindy the most – there’s just something about her. And she’s also been working more lately than she has in years. Although she hasn’t returned to the runways or starred in any major campaign recently, she’s seems to be doing non-stop editorial work to the point where it’s hard to keep up. Her latest is the summer issue of Muse magazine where she looks better than ever in the spread and looks legendary in a “Cindy Crawford” shirt on the cover. I loved the shirt so much, I even went and had one made! Yep– I sure did. Check out the video below to see more.
Now if we could only see all these girls together again on the cover of Vogue, I’d be a very happy fancy fruit.
This was huge – like totally, majorly, exciting. I follow as many 90s supermodels as I can on Twitter and in the last couple of weeks two of my biggest heroes (since I was a young lad) tweeted me back! And Cindy even shared my tweet with all her followers. I almost died. First, I tweeted Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell and shared a photo of my awesome t-shirt featuring the names of Linda, Cindy, Christy and Naomi (below). The t-shirt is an homage to the unforgettable time when the four of them walked down the runway to George Micheal’s “Freedom” at end of the Fall/Winter 1991 Gianni Versace fashion show. It was a pretty cool moment and the t-shirt is such a good reminder of the memorable time in fashion when models were stars. Anyway, I tweeted a photo of the t-shirt to Christy, Cindy and Naomi (Linda isn’t on Twitter) and Christy tweeted me back and said my tweet was “very sweet”. I freaked.
Then the other day, I found a really cool photo of Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford walking in Paris holding hands (taken around 20 years ago). I tweeted Cindy and Naomi and shared the photo. Cindy tweeted me back, and shared my tweet! She said “love this! Thanks for sharing!” Once again, I totally freaked. Two of the greatest and most legendary models ever noticed my tweet and then tweeted me back. It was huge.
The photo above is from a Vanity Fair shoot from 2008, shot by Mario Testino. Damn, they sure do look just as good there as they did 20 years ago.
Talk about faces – unforgettable.
And here’s the legendary Gianni Versace show from 1991 I mention above – back in the day when supermodels ruled the runway:
This was one of my favourite shows from Paris Fashion Week Fall Winter 2013. Olivier Rousteing has been doing the 80s thing at Balmain for a while now but it stills works. And this was a cool show (especially when so many of the shows this season weren’t super exciting). There weren’t tons of shows in Paris or Milan that inspired or excited me but this one made me smile. The clothes are super cool (and are clearly exaggerated for the runway) and many of the outfits look like they came straight off an episode of Dynasty – which is awesome. But there’s still a modern vibe to these looks. I loved the accessories too – some of the best of the season. Can’t wait to see whoever is brave enough to wear something from this collection first.
For the last few years, I loved Christopher Bailey’s collections for Burberry Prorsum and he changed it up a bit for his fall show – but I liked his spring collection better. The heart blouses, skirts and coats in the fall collection are sure to be a big hit but he also used some unusual and suggestive sheer latex (that looked like condoms) which is unlikely to work for his usual Burberry fans. But the combination of animal fabrics and camel coloured wool worked nicely for the classic Burberry trench and will for sure sell well. Other highlights (and my favourite looks in the show) were the dark red patent pieces – very chic and good looking (above). And the men’s sheered mink trench coat at the end was a nice touch. Wonder how many men will actually buy it? I wouldn’t and have a feeling it will look a lot better on a well-dressed lady but it was fun that he sent it down the runway on a dude.

This was exciting. After a couple years of small intimate presentations, where fashion media had limited access, Tom Ford chose London fashion week for his first real runway show since he left Gucci years ago. And it was quite a show. In case you’ve never seen the incredible detail and luxuriousness of Tom’s clothes in person, they’re amazing. And expensive. Like really, really expensive. But they are because they can be. He’s a master at managing and maintaining the exclusivity of his brand.
This was a glam show and the clothes screamed (over) indulgence. The myriad of opulent fabrics and luxurious materials featured throughout the collection almost had a vintage Versace (early 90s) vibe to it (like, this was way more in line with what Gianni Versace would be doing today if he was still alive, unlike anything Donatella continues to put out season after season). Some pieces even had a cartoon/comic book feeling. The collection also seemed to reference some of Tom’s time at Gucci in the late 90s. And the hair and make-up were also a signature Tom Ford for Gucci look (he did the slicked back hair parted on the side with smoky eyes often for his Gucci shows). While there were quite a few over the top, almost theatrical looks (wild furs, super colourful matching pencil skirts and knee high boots), there were also some crazy beautiful pieces that were good looking and wearable (like the beautiful suit below), and that we’ll for sure be seeing on celebrities and the super wealthy fashion elite in the near future.
I can’t find a video of the entire show on YouTube yet, but you can check out every look from the collection on Style.com
Out of all the newer crop of young designers in NYC at the moment, Jason Wu’s show during fashion week was one of my favourites. It was chic, modern and wearable. The make-up was also pretty (and interesting) and loved the way the hair was styled. The collection was mostly black and white, with some impressive bits of colour (vibrant red and blue) and featured tons of great power suits, high collared blouses, cocktail dresses and some really cool fur trimmed coats (above). One of my favourite looks was the alligator print leather jacket with the pleated white skirt – like, that’s a good looking outfit. Also, loved the evening wear at the end with the mullet tops and dress pants – super chic and different. Definitely not for everyone but on the right person, it’s a powerful look. And this was a strong showing for Jason Wu.

He rarely disappoints in terms of his presentation skills. He knows what will get people talking and this was the best Marc Jacob show in a while. He sent the models out twice in the same outfits. It was definitely interesting. We’re going to be seeing these clothes and pieces inspired by this collection a lot. Love all the metallics and the pyjama/shirt dresses. The sequin pieces seemed to range from navy to burgundy to rose gold – and does it get any cooler than sequin plaid?!? There were also some great fox fur pieces worn over the sequin dresses (but I didn’t like the ones that were actually shaped like foxes – creepy). And the Joan Jet styling with the black shag wigs was super hip. A couple of friends said that this show made them love Marc Jacobs all over again. If you’re a big fan of the Marc Jacob’s aesthetic, you’re going to love this collection.
Donna Karan hasn’t been my favourite the last few years but she definitely stepped it up his season. And what’s interesting is, much like Diane Von Furstenberg, this season she went back to her roots. The collection was heavenly influenced by Donna’s signature draped jersey look from the 80s and 90s. Lots of blacks, greys and browns, the collection was very New York. This was power dressing at its best. She also clearly designs with herself in mind and it works. With so many exciting and fresh young NY designers right now (Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rodarte), it’s pretty cool to see some of the greats like Donna, Diane, Ralph and Oscar have such a strong showing this season and base their collections on the aesthetics that made them famous years ago.
