During this unprecedented time, many people have lost their jobs and are looking for work. The situation is tough. It is depressing. And it is discouraging. You start to lose all confidence in yourself and question your value. To face constant rejection is not easy. Believe me, I know how it feels. I have struggled with my self-esteem and self-worth all my life. So, that is where the work comes in. There are things you can do to help you feel better. Here are some of my tips I have learned from therapy, helpful mentors, research, and online classes. I hope it helps you.
1. Be GENTLE with yourself. Don’t listen to your inner saboteur. Write down all the value you do have.
2. Stop thinking that certain things will make you HAPPY. A “perfect job” and more money does not make you happy. It is proven that money-oriented people have lower life satisfaction.
3. Stop assuming your PERCEPTIONS are correct. Comparisons are built to mess you up.
4. Spend less time on SOCIAL MEDIA. A lot of research has shown that the more time you spend on social media, the less happy you become. People present a false representation of their lives – and then you try to compare yourself to that?? Of course, that’s going to bring you down.
5. Learn about the IMPACT BIAS – the tendency to overestimate the impact of future events.
6. Learn that the mind pays more attention to the negative than the POSITIVE. Make note of that when you do so you can refocus your mentality.
7. Learn more about your character STRENGTHS – the qualities that are most essential to who you are.
8. Do not live in fear. It is the scariest place to be. A therapist once told me that depressed people live in the past and anxious people live in the future. So do your best to live in the NOW.
9. Remember that FEELINGS are not facts. That took me a long time to understand and it is so true.
10. Finally, be GRATEFUL – observe all you do have. “Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” – Eckhart Tolle
And always REMEMBER, you are not alone.
