WMCFW Spring 2016 collections took place last week and many of the shows were not only impressive but also a good reminder of the huge amount of creativity and talent among Canadian designers today. I had the pleasure of seeing Pink Tartan, Mackage and Mikael D and each collection had impressive elements that got the crowd talking. The designers behind the three popular labels also proved they know how to design with their customer in mind while also introducing new elements to continually keep it interesting.
Pink Tartan’s Spanish Influenced Seventies
Pink Tartan continues to remain one of the most hyped shows at WMCFW and for good reason. Designer Kim Newport-Mimran consistently gives the crowd something to discuss while also creating clothes her clients will want. For spring, she presented a somewhat Spanish-inspired collection with a distinct 70s flair. While some of the vibrant coloured and patterned separates had some of the crowd divided, the collection was well-balanced by some chic black and white pieces and soft solids that will no doubt prove to be good sellers once they become available.
Mackage’s Classic Trenches & Hip Leather
Mackage is one of those lines that consistently gives their customers what they want – good looking well-tailored coats and cool leather accessories. And designers Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan delivered a solid collection once again for spring 2016. It was a wearable collection with a little edge that’s sure to be popular with Mackage fans. The crimson and turquoise pops of colour added a burst of excitement to the mostly dark collection. I also loved the way the collection was styled with the single long fringe earrings and the strong red lips. Most of the men’s looks were pretty stellar as well.
Mikael D’s Dramatic “Forbidden Paradise”
When it comes to drama on the runway, Mikael D has it nailed. As the closing show at WMCFW, the designer brought the theatrics he’s known for and that the fashion crowd has come to expect. He’s definitely made a name for himself in terms of creating elaborate, detailed and sexy evening looks. The spring collection, called “Forbidden Paradise” had an ethereal quality and elaborate detailing combined with revealing cuts and flowing movement seemed to be key. I’m not sure how wearable many of the looks were and I thought the influence from designers like Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad and Versace was perhaps a little too obvious but the effort in detail and construction was clear.
Kudos to all the designers this season at WMCFW! Your talent is beyond admirable and thanks for helping Canadian fashion rise to a new level. Until next season!
