London Fall 2013 – TOM FORD!

Tom Ford

This was exciting. After a couple years of small intimate presentations, where fashion media had limited access, Tom Ford chose London fashion week for his first real runway show since he left Gucci years ago. And it was quite a show. In case you’ve never seen the incredible detail and luxuriousness of Tom’s clothes in person, they’re amazing. And expensive. Like really, really expensive. But they are because they can be. He’s a master at managing and maintaining the exclusivity of his brand.

This was a glam show and the clothes screamed (over) indulgence. The myriad of opulent fabrics and luxurious materials featured throughout the collection almost had a vintage Versace (early 90s) vibe to it (like, this was way more in line with what Gianni Versace would be doing today if he was still alive, unlike anything Donatella continues to put out season after season). Some pieces even had a cartoon/comic book feeling. The collection also seemed to reference some of Tom’s time at Gucci in the late 90s. And the hair and make-up were also a signature Tom Ford for Gucci look (he did the slicked back hair parted on the side with smoky eyes often for his Gucci shows). While there were quite a few over the top, almost theatrical looks (wild furs, super colourful matching pencil skirts and knee high boots), there were also some crazy beautiful pieces that were good looking and wearable (like the beautiful suit below), and that we’ll for sure be seeing on celebrities and the super wealthy fashion elite in the near future.

NY Fall 2013 – Jason Wu

Jason Wu

Out of all the newer crop of young designers in NYC at the moment, Jason Wu’s show during fashion week was one of my favourites. It was chic, modern and wearable. The make-up was also pretty (and interesting) and loved the way the hair was styled. The collection was mostly black and white, with some impressive bits of colour (vibrant red and blue) and featured tons of great power suits, high collared blouses, cocktail dresses and some really cool fur trimmed coats (above). One of my favourite looks was the alligator print leather jacket with the pleated white skirt – like, that’s a good looking outfit. Also, loved the evening wear at the end with the mullet tops and dress pants – super chic and different. Definitely not for everyone but on the right person, it’s a powerful look.  And this was a strong showing for Jason Wu.

NY Fall 2013 – Marc Jacobs

MarcHe rarely disappoints in terms of his presentation skills. He knows what will get people talking and this was the best Marc Jacob show in a while. He sent the models out twice in the same outfits. It was definitely interesting. We’re going to be seeing these clothes and pieces inspired by this collection a lot. Love all the metallics and the pyjama/shirt dresses. The sequin pieces seemed to range from navy to burgundy to rose gold – and does it get any cooler than sequin plaid?!? There were also some great fox fur pieces worn over the sequin dresses (but I didn’t like the ones that were actually shaped like foxes – creepy). And the Joan Jet styling with the black shag wigs was super hip. A couple of friends said that this show made them love Marc Jacobs all over again. If you’re a big fan of the Marc Jacob’s aesthetic, you’re going to love this collection.

NY Fall 2013 – Donna Karan

Donna

Donna Karan hasn’t been my favourite the last few years but she definitely stepped it up his season.  And what’s interesting is, much like Diane Von Furstenberg, this season she went back to her roots. The collection was heavenly influenced by Donna’s signature draped jersey look from the 80s and 90s. Lots of blacks, greys and browns, the collection was very New York. This was power dressing at its best. She also clearly designs with herself in mind and it works. With so many exciting and fresh young NY designers right now (Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Rodarte), it’s pretty cool to see some of the greats like Donna, Diane, Ralph and Oscar have such a strong showing this season and base their collections on the aesthetics that made them famous years ago.

NY Fall 2013 – Oscar de la Renta

Oscar

This was one of the most highly anticipated shows of the season. Why? Because John Galliano contributed. And the collaboration pulled off – the show was one of the best Oscar de la Renta shows in years – stunning. There was definitely a hint of Dior but many pieces also looked like old school de la Renta – lots of embroidery and some of the most beautifully constructed suits of the season in jewel tones and really soft leather. The collection was modern, good looking and, of course, fancy.

NY Fall 2013 – Diane Von Furstenberg

DVF2This was one of the best DVF collections I’ve seen in a while – definitely Diane going back to her roots. Featuring some interesting and sexy fabrics, there were a lot of beautiful blouses and skirts, and some totally awesome coats with leather sleeves and super cool fabric combinations. Also really liked the way the models were styled – big flowing hair and red lips. It was refreshing to see happy models on the runway. Love that they’re all smiling and aren’t so serious and morose that we see so often on the runways lately. This was a happy show – it reminded me of the great shoes in the early 90s. The collection had a 70s/80s vibe with a bit of rock & roll. And it was totally self referencing, which is cool when you have as much as a fascinating fashion history as Diane does.

Grammy Ladies

Rihanna in Azzedine Alaia

021013-Rihanna-350No a huge fan of hers right now – that’s a different story. But have to say, she looks incredible in this custom Alaia red dress. The fit is beautiful and the cut is impeccable. This dress manages to be both elegant and sexy – which isn’t an easy task. Her new hair looks great too – like old school Rihanna. And how good is this colour on her? Also love the matching red lips and nails. I think this could be one of my favourite Rihanna looks. Side note – Naomi Campbell has long been an Azzedine Alaia muse. She’d look stunning in this dress too.

Jennifer Lopez in Anthony Vaccarello

021013-jennifer-lopez-350Really? Again? Obviously, I don’t need to make the Angelina Jolie reference because everyone already has. Jennifer Lopez is so beautiful and has such a great figure but she’s trying too hard lately. This look on her just isn’t cool – it just looks like she’s trying super hard to look and dress like she did 15 years ago. Although, the accessories she chose are perfect – the Tom Ford strappy black sandals with gold ankle detail are crazy cool and I like the black and gold Jimmy Choo bag too.

Beyonce in Osman

021013-Beyonce-350She may have rocked the March Vogue cover but not so much in this colour blocked black and white Osman pantsuit. It’s not bad or anything, it’s just pretty toned down for Beyonce. It looks like something she’d maybe wear for a night on the town in NYC or on a talk show but it’s a surprising choice for the Grammys. The matching geometric cuffs are pretty cool though. She’s received so much attention lately at the Obama’s inauguration and the Super Bowl that maybe she wanted to be a more low key. I guess she just wasn’t interested in pulling a “Jennifer Lopez” – which is what we should start calling it when it’s so obvious your dress choices are based on getting more attention than anyone else.

Katy Perry in Gucci

021013-katy-perry-350

I was surprised when I heard this was Gucci. It seems really gimmicky – which suits Katy Perry but Gucci is definitely not gimmicky. And it’s a really odd, unfaltering mint green. Then I heard the whole look was based on early 70’s Priscilla Presley and I was kind of getting it. But then I decided I don’t care either way because it’s Katy Perry and she’s not someone I pay much attention to.

Beyonce in Givenchy = Good Vogue Cover

Beyonce+Vogue+March+2013+1

Naomi Campbell recently said that they need to bring back models on magazine covers – totally agree – but I do really like the new Vogue cover with Beyonce.  She’s stunning with her hair tied up rocking a black and white Givenchy dress. And love the eye makeup and the one piece of hair hanging down to the side. The rest of the shoot looks pretty good too. She looks super fancy in looks by Alexander McQueen, Oscar de la Renta and Marni.

Not only is she an incredible performer, but girl sure knows how to pose for a camera. I wonder if she practices that as much as she does all her awesome dance moves?

Check out this video of the Vogue shoot. It’s a good one.

SAG Awards

Marion Cotillard in Dior Haute Couture

SAG2

Very pretty and chic. I like the varied length – it’s elegant and feminine. And the jewel tone colour is good looking. But it would be nice to see her in something other than Dior. I know she’s a spokesperson for the line but it’s little predictable. I’d love to see her wear a different designers to the Oscars. Remember when she wore the mermaid Gaultier Couture gown she wore to the Oscars in 2008? That was an amazingly cool dress. And she wore it so well.

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen

SAG3

So much better than the odd mint green Calvin Klein dress she wore to the Golden Globes. It’s still not my favourite look on her though – I don’t think the crimson red works super well with her complexion and hair colour. But she’s so pretty and charming and seems really down to earth. It’s hard not to like her.

Nicole Kidman in  Vivienne Westwood Couture

SAG5

I normally love Vivienne Westwood but not this one. The colour is beautiful, and maybe it’s just me, but it seems a little beauty pagenty. Like, I could see this on someone in the running for Miss Universe. The combination of beading, the sheerness at the top and the side slit just doesn’t feel expensive – even though I know it totally was. I bet it looked better in person.

Sophia Vergara in Donna Karan Atelier

SAGD6

I said the same thing about her at the Emmys, the Golden Globes and now the SAG Awards. She always wears the same thing. Sure, she’s gorgeous and sexy but it would be nice if she changed it up a bit. At least this one is a tiny bit different from some of her recent red carpet looks but not by much. I’d love to see Sophia in something edgy and more high fashion. Picture Sophia in the black Tom Ford alligator print dress Rihanna wore last year to the MET gala. That would be awesome on her.

Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

SAG4

I like this dress and still love her hair. And the strong red lips sure look good with black. The length of the dress is also cool (a retro vibe with a bit of edge) and the shoes are perfect with it. Don’t get why so many people have such a hate on for Anne Hathaway lately. Maybe she’s a little too sweet but I think she seems like a real nice gal.

Julianne Moore, in Chanel Haute Couture

022m

Her first award show outing since the Golden Globes and it’s obviously hard to top the incredible custom Tom Ford she wore that night – it was such a great dress. Not loving this black and white Chanel on her. The hair and make-up are lovely but the dress seems a little big, doesn’t it?

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

SAG1

Like Marion Cotillard, she must also be on contract with Dior because she always wears it to the bid award shows lately. And other than the beautifully tailored black tuxedo suit she wore with the scarf tied around her neck a couple of months ago, I haven’t loved most of her Dior choices.  The looks just aren’t that exciting or interesting. I’d love to see her Balmain – that would be cool.

Fancy Metallic Shoes

November 336

I’m really into metallic shoes right now and for spring. Holts has a a good selection but these silver Jimmy Choo Maya pumps are my favourite – very cool. They’re a nice height (not too high), the toe is super pointy, the bow detail is a nice touch and this style of pump couldn’t be more chic right now. These would also go with pretty much everything – a suit, skinny jeans, a tight pencil skirt…

Oh, and Amanda Seyfried wore them on the cover of InStyle’s January issue. She wears them well with a Chanel bodysuit and skirt. See – they do go with everything.
