Since the show first began in 1973, the American Music Awards have always taken a back seat to the Grammys. And this year wasn’t much different. Many of music’s biggest stars were absent and while I’ve seen a lot more exciting red carpets, there were still a few fashion highlights. Thankfully Jennifer Lopez, who hosted the show, changed 11 times throughout the night. No shocker there – I’m honestly surprised she kept it down to 11. Lopez is always fun to watch because few stars make as much of an effort as much she does. She gives new meaning to “Hostess with the Mostess” ( easy I know). More on the some of the night’s most talked about looks below.
Jennifer Lopez in DSquared2, Michael Cinco, Zuhair Murad, Julien Macdonald, Balmain, Michael Costello, Charbel Zoe and Yousef Al-Jasmi
Lopez never fails to disappoint. Whether you’re a fan or not, Jennifer Lopez ALWAYS brings it. She’s never been one to step aside and let others shine and last night we saw her in many of her favourite looks – a lot of sheer, a lot of sparkle and a lot of everything else. I love seeing what Lopez wears because she makes it fun and always gives us something to talk about it. Plus she’s so beautiful and never ages. Just like Jane Fonda and Cindy Crawford. Which look was your favourite? Scroll over photos above for details.
Gwen Stefani in Yousef Al-Jasmi
I looove Gwen Stefani and almost always love her red carpet choices but this wasn’t my favourite look. It’s sort of vintage-glamourous/sexy, and while it’s different for her, the whole look just doesn’t work for me. It feels a little too try. And she never seems like she’s trying too hard. It kind looks like a dress Victoria Beckham wouldn’ve worn years ago when she was so “NOTICE ME!” I also liked her hair and makeup more when she was performing. But I still totally lover her.
Selena Gomez in Givenchy
I feel like Selena Gomez has a new stylist because she’s definitely stepped up her style game lately. This shimmering red halter Givenchy dress is very cool and incredibly well-made. Check out the detail around the neckline and plunging back. It’s dramatic and chic yet wearable, and it looks great the young singer.
Ciara in Reem Acra
Obviously this is a beautiful dress. The cut and intricate detailing are perfect but I feel like we’ve seen this exact dress a lot before. And it feels very Kardashian so I’m kind of over it. But it looks incredible on her and I love the soft hair and makeup. Smart choice for such an elaborately detailed dress.
Gigi Hadid in Bao Tranchi
My favourite new supermodel, Hadid chose revealing head-turning white separates by rising designer Bao Tranchi. Very few people (maybe 0.001 %) can rock this dress Hadid pulls it off. She’s young and one of the world’s top models so why not? But everyone was really talking about her new short bob which turned out to just be a little hair magic. Well played, Gigi. Oh, and I love the diamond ear climber too.
Zendaya in Emanuel Ungaro
I’m not sure what’s she’s famous for but I think she has awesome style and I always enjoy seeing her on the red carpet. When I first saw this pink top and skirt, I thought it might be Erdem until I found out it was Emanuel Ungaro. And impressive choice and a solid, cool and age appropriate look for the AMAs.
Carrie Underwood in Elie Madi
What is this dress and how does this happen? Imagine the access Undewood and her stylist have to designer clothes, and this is what they choose? I don’t get it. A fashion blogging friend said that his grandma liked this look and thought she “looked very pretty.” I guess that’s who she’s dressing for then…
Nina Dobrev in Zuhair Murad
I’m a little baffled by this sequin-encrusted ensemble. Sure it’s pretty and delicate but it’s such an odd choice for a young cool actress to wear to the AMAs. It’s a music award show not a stiff fundraiser for wealthy socialites and debutantes. Which is exactly what this look is perfect for. It’s also an odd choice for November. But she’s sure lovely looking and she seems nice. And the shoes are killer.
Rebel Wilson in Eloquii
Wilson is awesome and this is a great look on the well-loved comedian. She shines (literally) and looks happy and confident, which is always nice to see. She also looked liked she was having a blast during the show.
Kendall and Kylie Jenner in Oriett Domenech and Bryan Hearns
Well…you know what they say, “if you can’t beat them, join them.” Begrudgingly.
Until the next award show!
