Fancy LOTW – Diane Kruger in Chanel

650x977xdiane-kruger-chanel-couture2.jpg.pagespeed.ic.4BF_zqQugp

Diane Kruger has awesome taste and a super talented stylist. She always chooses clothes well. She’s fashion forward but wears clothes that suit her. Kruger just gets it and seems to have fun with fashion – which is how it should be. Here she is in a chic embellished little black strapless dress at the Chanel Little Black Jacket Event in Sao Paulo. Interesting, the dress is a modified version this one from the legendary fashion house’s spring 2013 haute couture collection. She completes the look with her favourite black-ankle strap Stuart Weitzman sandals, a nice simple compliment to the heavily detailed dress.  Her hair is perfect and soft and the makeup is light and fresh. Once again, Diane nailed her red carpet look.  Continue reading “Fancy LOTW – Diane Kruger in Chanel”

Jane Fonda – Fancy As Ever

Jane Fonda-20131009-36

Few people are as fancy as Jane Fonda. She’s amazing – and I don’t use that word often. She just gets it. I often say that she’s single handedly changed the way people age. SHE’S 75!! And what’s so cool about her is that she doesn’t look too fake (Joan Rivers). Sure, she’s had some work done (admittedly) but she still looks like herself and she’s allowed herself to age. And not only is she fancy, she seems super cool and fun. Here she is at the Women’s Media Awards wearing skinny jeans, a long pearl necklace and an awesome sequin jacket blazer. This is a super chic look. I’m really into sequin blazers right now (I have one myself).  Continue reading “Jane Fonda – Fancy As Ever”

Gwyneth in White Lanvin & Red Lips

gwyneth-lanvin2.jpg.pagespeed.ce.kqo0Dhx63J

Gwyneth Paltrow may seem a little painful sometimes, but like her or not, it’s hard to deny the fact that she’s an awesome dresser (thanks likely in most part to her talented stylist). I mean, could this look be any better? At the premiere of her new movie Thanks for Sharing, the star looked beautiful in a white Lanvin dress from the Resort 2014 collection. The look is super feminine and flattering. While the dress has a bit of a retro vibe, the cut and length is very current. The minimal accessories and very cool Nicholas Kirkwood ankle strap heels keep the look modern and clean, and is totally in line with what we just saw at New York fashion week. And the vibrant red lips add a pop a colour and are perfect with the whole look (I sure think that red lips are underrated – the colour works so much better than most women think). This is also an easy look to emulate. A simple cocktail length white dress, awesome ankle strap heels, minimal accessories and red lips. Just don’t wear something like this to someone else’s wedding – that would be bad. Although Jennifer Lopez totally would.

MTV Awards – Good, Bad & Miley

The MTV Awards are definitely not what they used to be. But last night’s show did receive a lot of hype. If you caught some of it, you know what everyone is talking about this morning. And it’s not the NSYNC reunion. If Miley’s whole act was purely to get everyone talking today, then she definitely accomplished her goal. But if her performance was intended to be fun and sexy then she should be very, very embarrassed today. I felt awkward watching it at home – can you imagine if you were actually there?! Now on to the clothes…

Miley Cyrus in Vintage Dolce & Gabbana

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

I’ll be honest and say that for the most part I’ve been liking Miley’s style lately. She’s been looking young, fresh and fun (except for those horrible sweat-pant/jeans she wore a while ago). But I’m totally not into her look last night. It was vintage Dolce & Gabbana. It’s too bad because when it comes to vintage Dolce & Gabbana, there are thousands of looks she could’ve chosen that would have been way cooler than this. It’s just bad. As the legendary Michael K from Dlisted would say “What In The Hell Kind of GD Outfit Is This?!”

Katy Perry in Emanuel Ungaro

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

Perfect for the MTV Awards. If it looks familiar, it is – Coco Rocha wore a longer version of the dress to this year’s Met Ball. Yes, it’s maybe a little predictable when her new single is called “Roar” but it works. The side slit balances well with the long sleeves and the gold embellishments around the neckline add to the drama. It’s a good look on Katy. And love the gold and black Celine ankle strap shoes. The dress is from Emanuel Ungaro’s Fall 2013 collection, which I really liked. And I’m pleased the brand is coming back with Fausto Puglisi at the helm because the fashion house has a great legacy.

Lady Gaga in Prabal Gurung

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Red Carpet

I like when Lady Gaga tones down her look a bit but not sure it worked last night on the red carpet. Prabal Gurung is super talented but don’t think this dress was the best choice for this occasion. Maybe on someone else at a different event, it would have been really cool. But what’s with the really fake wig? It’s awful and distracting. But the tough thing with Gaga is you never know if it’s on purpose or not. In fact, it probably was and I’m just not sophisticated enough to get her brilliance.

Selena Gomez in Versace

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - ArrivalsAnother example of how Donatella just doesn’t have Gianni’s brilliance as a designer. If he designed this dress, it would have been better. Gianni knew how to stop just before it was too much. Donatella doesn’t have that skill. It’s good colour though. And Selena is a beautiful girl. Love the red lips and emerald jewelry.

Taylor Swift in Herve Leger

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

This is kind of a yawn for me. And Herve Leger seems so Kardishian now. I get Taylor Swift tries to be responsible when it comes to dressing for her fans and doesn’t ever do anything too sexy or over the top – which is cool – but it seems like she doesn’t have any fun when it comes to fashion. Like, loosen up a bit. Somehow I have a feeling that’s never going to happen.

Erin Wasson in Alexandre Vauthier Couture

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

Model Erin Wasson. Alexandre Vauthier Couture. MTV Awards. Why not? And how awesome would it have been if Taylor Swift showed up in this?! I’m giggling just thinking about it.

Diane Kruger in Awesome Mary Katrantzou Dress

xdiane-kruger-mary-dress1.jpg,qresize=650,P2C937.pagespeed.ic.vODhZAZURB
Photo from fashiongonerogue.com

At the recent FOX Summer Party in LA, fashion risk taker Diane Kruger showed up in an incredible (a term I do not use lightly or often) digital and floral print Mary Katrantzou dress. From the label’s Resort 2014 collection (the designer’s first Resort collection), this is an important dress – and is going to be copied across the board. It’s chic, sexy and modern. I love the colour and print combination. The biased cut at the bottom is also cool, different and surprisingly flattering. As usual, Diane styled the dress perfectly as well. The loose tussled hair, pretty colour lips and ankle strap sandals all work together to pull the look off perfectly. With a dress like this, you don’t need much in terms of accessories so she was wise to keep the rest of the look simple. Once again, Diane nails it. The actress has super good taste – and a great stylist.

Angelina Stuns on Red Carpet

Angelina has kept it pretty low key since she underwent a preventative double mastectomy but she made some pretty glam appearances on the red carpet recently for the premieres of Brad Pitt’s new movie World War Z. For her first showing, she wore a black floor-length Saint Laurent dress with a shear front. It was simple and not super exciting but suited her low key vibe. It reminded me of the red Azzedine Alaia Azedine dress Rihanna wore to the Grammys and I liked that one way more. But Angelina still looked beautiful, healthy and increadible as usual.

For the second premiere, she wore a super good-looking black Saint Laurent suit. I love this look. It’s modern, simple and chic. It’s also a really easy to emulate – a well fitting black blazer with matching skinny pants that sit lower on the hip and slightly sheer black blouse with a bow tied at the neck. Then black stilettos. All of these pieces would also be great worn separately – good basics.

Then after two solid black looks, she surprised everyone at the next premiere in an awesome and striking custom Ralph & Russo peplum dress with gold metal detailing on the sides. This is an awesome dress – super flattering, modern and feminine – and she looked amazing. The white stilettos keep it simple and the rose gold bracelet is pretty great too. I’m not familiar with Ralph & Russo but I’m sure we’re going to be seeing a lot more of their designs from now on.

Cannes Film Festival – Fancy Dresses & Jewels

Cannes 2013
Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman, Cara Delevingne and Jessica Chastain on the red carpet.

Love looking at all the fancy dresses, jewels, celebs, models, parties and yachts every year at Cannes. It’s so over the top, it’s awesome. This is where some of the biggest stars go all out because Cannes is all about excess – so there’s no need to hold back. Here are a some looks I thought were fancy and memorable this year.  Continue reading “Cannes Film Festival – Fancy Dresses & Jewels”

Met Gala – Good, Bad & Punk

MetGala2013
The biggest night of the year for fashion. And my thoughts this year are mixed. The theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture”. There was SO much opportunity to be super fun and creative but aside from a few people (SJP & Madonna to name a few), it just wasn’t very punk. Kind of disappointing. It felt like many attendees missed the memo altogether. But having said that, there were still many memorable looks.  I wish I could mention them all.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles Deacon and Philip Treacy

sarah-jessica-parker-290

One of faves. Could this be any better considering the theme? It doesn’t really get more “punk to couture” than this. It’s super high fashion yet doesn’t take itself too seriously. This is totally something Carrie Bradshaw would wear to the Met Gala. And her thigh-high boots are custom plaid Christian Louboutin.

Madonna in Givenchy Haute Couture

enhanced-buzz-17004-1367894591-0

She’s Madonna man. And she didn’t disappoint. Fun. Fashion. Punk. One of the best of the night. And the detail on the Givenchy blazer is incredible. Madonna doesn’t want the readers of People magazine to like what she’s wearing and few can pull off this look quite like she can. It makes me like her again.

 Giselle Bündchen in Anthony Vaccarello

enhanced-buzz-25063-1367895488-1

Love this. Perfect for a supermodel like Giselle. It’s glam, sexy, fun and edgy. It looks like to a model in the early 80’s going to some puck rock bar in the East Village. And I like her hair styled like that too.

Sienna Miller in Burberry

enhanced-buzz-7418-1367932224-10

This is spot on considering the theme. This spiked leather jacket is unbelievable. And so good over a long white dress. Love her hair pinned up to the side and her choice of accessories too. This is cool. And this is Sienna.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Valentino Haute Couture

enhanced-buzz-5928-1367887219-1

“Gwyneth totally nailed it this year!” said no one. Major disappointment. Even though she annoys so many people, she has great taste and can wear pretty much anything. She normally does red carpets so well but this pink Valentino wasn’t a good choice. It’s boring on a night where attendees are encouraged to take chances. Apparently this had to do with the whole “pink is punk” idea but why not try and have a little more fun?

Cara Delevingne in Burberry

enhanced-buzz-12999-1367895356-14

Big time model of the moment and this dress is made for the night. Love the spikes on the top. It’s like refined, modern punk. Why couldn’t Gwyneth have worn something like this? She would have been one of my faves if she did.

Jennifer Lopez in Michael Kors

enhanced-buzz-9137-1367898336-26

I like this sheer long sleeve animal print dress. A lot. It reminds me a bit of Rihanna’s long sleeve alligator Tom Ford dress at last year’s Met Gala. And although it’s not super punk, it’s still a little edgy for Jennifer Lopez. And she has the attitude and definitely the self confidence to pull this off. I think her hair works well for the event too.

Rooney Mara in Givenchy Haute Couture

enhanced-buzz-1183-1367886830-3

The detail on the dress is super impressive (the cut, the fabric, the zippers). It’s more goth than punk, and it’s not a big stretch from what she normally wears on the red carpet, but it’s still a solid choice.

Gwen Stefani in Maison Martin Margiela

enhanced-buzz-11628-1367896877-10

When it was announced that Gwen Stefani would be in Maison Martin Margiela, it seemed like a no-brainer. Although, this is different, she didn’t bring it the way we all thought she would. How could she have not have gone with the punk theme? Gwen Stefani is super cool and can rock some pretty different things. So needless to day, this was pretty underwhelming. Gavin’s suit is pretty hip though.

Cameron Dias in Stella McCartney

enhanced-buzz-5569-1367897040-2

Super different and a good colour. Also love the gold spiked belt. At least this is interesting and she took a chance. And apparently the cape is backless. But she looks a little stiff.

 Beyonce in Givenchy

enhanced-buzz-2881-1367894264-7

I know it’s the Met Gala and you’re totally supposed to go all out but this isn’t working for me. The fabric on the bottom is pretty incredible reminds me of old school Versace and the matching boots are cool but the fit isn’t very flattering and it sort of looks like House of Dereon (Beyonce and her mother’s fashion line). And that’s not a compliment.

Linda Evengelista in Marchesa

enhanced-buzz-13547-1367894639-7

Not totally sure what’s happening here (Game Of Thrones I guess) but it’s Linda Evengelista and she’s a modeling legend. Also, along with Stella Tenant, was one of the only original supermodels to attend this year so I felt I had to mention her.

Christina Ricci in Vivienne Westwood

enhanced-buzz-28688-1367887227-0

She got it. Plaid. Vivienne Westwood. Enough said.

Katy Perry in Dolce & Gabdana

enhanced-buzz-4638-1367893984-3

This is straight from the runway for Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2013 show. It’s a cool look (very Dolce & Gabanna) but it’s not punk. She should’ve been able to take more of a chance and not just wear something styled the exact same way we saw on the runway a few months ago.

Anna Wintour in Chanel Couture

enhanced-buzz-31946-1367886802-9

This is one of the night’s worst. Is she above the theme that she helped create?!? I don’t get it. She’s supposed to be the most powerful woman in fashion and she shows up to one of the biggest and most important nights in fashion in an uninspiring floral (really?) dress that excited no one. And it’s not like she’s not capable of going with the Met Gala theme. Remember the Chanel dress she wore in to the Met Gala in 2008 when the  theme was Superheroes?

Blake Lively in Gucci Première

enhanced-buzz-31963-1367893936-21

Another disappointment of the night. Blake is capable of so much more. Sure, this is a pretty dress and the detail is interesting but she’s young and cool. She could’ve had fun with her look and done something different. Like she’d be awesome in something from Balmain’s most recent 80’s inspired collection.

Kim Kardashian in Givenchy

enhanced-buzz-12695-1367892466-0

Well this was unfortunate. Givenchy sure seemed like the go-to designer of the night. But this – not so much. In fact it’s pretty bad. Her face at least looks pretty at least, right? I bet she was SO MAD that the first time she is allowed to go to the Met Gala she’s pregnant.

Oscar Dress Chat on CTV Morning Live

CTV

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to chat about a few Oscars dresses with the lovely Pearl Tsang on CTV Morning Live. Always fun to talk about fashion with my friend Pearl (even though we disagreed on Naomi Watts in the incredible custom in Armani Privé – I loved it, Pearl not so much). Click here or the photo above to check out the segment. Looking forward to our next fashion recap!

Oscars 2013 – Fancy Dress Review

Naomi Watts in Armani Privé

Naomi
Photo from huffingtonpost.ca

This sequined gunmetal custom Armani Privé gown with the asymmetric neckline is legendary. It’s super modern, different and beautiful. It also fits her incredibly well. Apparently she started working with Armani on this dress right after the Golden Globes. So she came to play. She wanted to be one of the night’s stand outs and succeeded. Love her hair too – it’s tied up but not overly done. And she was wearing $1.5 million of Neil Lane diamonds. That always helps. Love this whole look. One of Naomi’s best ever.

 Anne Hathaway in Prada

Anne
Photo from style.com

She was one of the one’s to watch last night so the pressure was on. And interestingly she was supposed to wear Valentino but changed her mind at the last minute. And it’s too bad she did. The pink is way too cute and the fit is odd around her boobs – you can totally see her nipples. It also doesn’t hang that well. And I don’t understand the necklace (which was Tiffany and beautiful). I think she had something really dramatic planned and backed out at the last minute. She stuck the Valentino or worn the Armani Privé dress she performed in – it was interesting and different.

Halle Berry in Custom Versace

Halle
Photo from style.com

This is not typical Versace. And she wore typical Versace to the Golden Globes and it was bad – very Donatella (who just showed her fall 2013 collection in Milan and it was vinyl and trampy). But this look is pretty stunning. The fit couldn’t be better – the way the dress is constructed is unbelievable. The detail is so fine. Look how it hangs. She’s such a beautiful woman that it was nice to see her in something that does her justice. But I would’ve picked different earrings, like big yellow diamond hoops. These are too predictable and matchy.

Jessica Chastain in Custom Armani Privé

Jessica
Photo from style.com

Beautiful dress. Beautiful lady. The detail, the beading, the fit – old Hollywood glamour and very good  choice. And I was surprised at how good this colour looked on her but it sure does. Her hair and make-up are lovely too – very Veronica Lake. And those were some fancy vintage Harry Winston diamond earrings (totalling 10 carats). One of Jessica’s best looks ever.

Jennifer Laurence in Dior Haute Couture

Jennifer
Photo from style.com

We knew Jennifer Laurence was also going to wear Dior Haute Couture and this is a lovely dress but we’ve seen it so many times before. It doesn’t feel young or fresh. It also has a bridal quality. I do like the simple long diamond Chopard necklace (74-carat) worn down her back. But I think she could’ve worn something younger and fresher.

Jane Fonda in Versace

Jane
Photo from style.com

Another major ‘wow’ moment of the night. She’s so amazing, timeless and cool. And how good does she look in this dress – incredible! And that bright yellow shade is not an easy one to wear but she pulls it off well. Jane Fonda continues to look better, healthier and more beautiful than many actresses a third of her age – she 76! (hard to believe I know).

Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille Couture

Zoe
Photo from style.com

Zoe has an very talented stylist because she always brings it. This dress is super cool and very good looking. Love the detail on the bodice and the belt. Also, love the grey/steal/black colour variation on the train – it’s interesting and different. This is fashion forward and Zoe does that well.

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu

Kerri
Photo from style.com

Like Zoe Saldana, Kerry Washington also brings it – always. She has great taste and I like h she chooses different looks. This was pretty dress and the detail on the bodice is really cool. Also love the colour – it’s fresh, young and suits her well.

Selma Hayek in Alexander McQueen

Selma
Photo from style.com

High on drama and glamour, not many can pull this off but Salma sure does. This looks expensive which is always a good thing. She’s pretty little but looks quite statuesque is this flattering black velvet column dress with embellished and jewelled neckline. Not a huge fan of the tiara though. It wasn’t necessary and I’m not sure they’re ever cool.

Nicole Kidman in L’Wren Scott

Nicole
Photo from style.com

This wasn’t Nicole’s greatest but I thought she still looked good. It’s not super interesting or original but I like the variation in colour on the beading at the top but not a fan of the pattern at the bottom. It wasn’t necessary. And her hair looks pretty loose and she accessorized well – the 19th-century gold-and-black enamel pendant earrings earrings and 19th-century gold-and-diamond bracelet (both Fred Leighton) were some of the best accessories of the night. Nicole has good taste in expensive jewels.

Jennifer Aniston in Valentino

jennifera
Photo from style.com

Boring. It’s a great colour but she’s often wears strapless and her hair always looks the same – for like 10 years! She looks like she just tried on the dress at a fitting on day. You’d think she could maybe change it up a bit for something as huge as the Oscars.

Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton

Reese
Photo from style.com

I wasn’t feeling this two-toned Louis Vuitton. It’s a great colour but it didn’t fit well around her boobs. And it seemed pretty predictable. In 2002, Reese Witherspoon wore a beautiful black Valentino dress to the Oscars, her hair was shorter and she looked really cool. Was hoping we’d see something like that again. This is not Marc Jacobs best work for Louis Vuitton.

Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta

Amy
Photo from style.com

There’s way too much going on with the dress. The beading on the top, the massive tule-embellished bodice and all the volume is over the top. I’m sure it would have been better in person but this style of dress has been done too much at the Oscars. And the colour is kind of blah – it’s like a non-colour. Not Amy’s best look.

Sandra Bullock in Elie Saab Haute Couture

Sandra
Photo from style.com

I love Sandra Bullock but this was a miss for me. It’s not memorable and the cut of the arms isn’t very faltering. The flattened hair didn’t work either. Although I appreciate how Sandra was stepping back and letting the women who were nominated stand out. Sandra Bullock is definitely not one to pull a “Jennifer Lopez”.

Catherine Zeta Jones in Zuhair Murad

Catherine
Photo from style.com

When I first saw Catherine on the red carpet, I thought she looked great. But then the more I saw the dress, the less I liked it. It’s kind of dated and, although I don’t mind the top, the bottom is borderline tacky. It looks like something a 75 year old (not in Jane Fonda years) woman would teaching a ballroom dance class. Interestingly  Zuhair Murad is a favourite of Jennifer Lopez. But the earrings are beautiful. I’ll give her that.

My Favourite – Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture

Charlize
Photo from style.com

We knew she was going to wear Dior and this was a wise choice – so chic and good looking. The fit is outstanding. It’s hard to tell in photos but the top is beaded. It’s super simple yet so glamorous – this is refined elegance. Charlize was definitively one of this year’s major wow moments and had the most dramatic entrance. It’s a little reminiscent of Anne Hathaway in Chanel at the Golden Globes but this is cooler and how it should’ve been done. And her haircut is part of what makes this look so great and fresh. She’s also wearing vintage Harry Winston diamond bracelets, totaling more than 110 carats.  I get the diamond studs (Harry Winston 5-carat diamond studs worth $1.6 million) but wish she wore long diamond link earrings that hung down to her collar bone. It would’ve added some drama. Other than that, this is for sure one of evening’s best.
