NYFW Spring 2014 – Black and White 90s at Helmut Lang

_AGA3840.450x675White and black will remain popular throughout the spring, especially according to Helmut Lang. The collection was typical Helmut Lang – which is a good thing. Designers Nicole and Michael Covolos do justice with the brand’s unique and modern aesthetic. And this collection in particular was heavily influenced by the mid 90s. Predominantly black and white, it featured some beautifully cut pieces that are sure to be super popular with Helmut Lang fans. There were also some really cool bags and shoes that will undoubtedly be big sellers. Check out a few more looks below.

NYFW Spring 2014 – Pastels & Patterns at Prabal Gurung

MARC0057.450x675

And interesting and different collection for Gurung. Featuring more colours and complex patterns than usual, the collection had some really unique and wearable pieces. It was also fun and didn’t seem to take itself too seriously. Many of these pieces are going to be super popular with the fashion crowd. And the sunglasses rocked – they’re going to be hot items next spring. A few more of my favourite looks from the collection below.

Cool (And Fancy) Bracelets for Men at MR PORTER

Balenciaga wrapped creased leather bracelet ($165)

I’ve long been a major fan of men’s bracelets – if fact I’ve been known to say “A man can never have too many plaid shirts – or bracelets.” And one my favourite new spots online to find new and cool ones is at MR PORTER – which is definitely one of the best men’s fashion sites out there. Not only do they have an incredible selection of clothing, shoes, accessories and gifts, they do some pretty cool editorial stuff as well with sections like “The Look” and “The Journal”. Their bracelet selection includes luxury brands like Balenciaga, Luis Morais, Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Bottega Veneta and more affordable ones like Folk and Miansai (of which I already have a couple and could for sure use a few more). And they do a great job in their description of each piece, including clothing suggestions on what you can pair each bracelet with.  Continue reading “Cool (And Fancy) Bracelets for Men at MR PORTER”

The Original Supermodels Cover Interview Magazine

LINDA

Linda

My friends are back! I haven’t been this excited about a September cover (in this case multiple covers) in years. Interview magazine’s September issue is a tribute to models and features some of the most legendary supermodels of all time. In a spread called “The Originals”, the girls many of us idolized in the 90s prove once again what made them famous in the first place. Not only are many of these supermodels incredible models, they have personality that comes through in their photos. These are the models we knew on a first name basis in the 90s – they were all friends, partied together, covered gossip magazine covers and dated and married movie stars, musicians and billionaires. The actual interviews themselves sound pretty juicy too as they open up about the start of their careers and their rise to the top of the fashion industry.

I think I might buy each issue and put the all the covers on my wall – in my own personal tribute to my junior high locker – because it was constantly covered in photos featuring these beautiful women.

Check out Interview magazine’s gallery to see more photos of the modeling legends.

MTV Awards – Good, Bad & Miley

The MTV Awards are definitely not what they used to be. But last night’s show did receive a lot of hype. If you caught some of it, you know what everyone is talking about this morning. And it’s not the NSYNC reunion. If Miley’s whole act was purely to get everyone talking today, then she definitely accomplished her goal. But if her performance was intended to be fun and sexy then she should be very, very embarrassed today. I felt awkward watching it at home – can you imagine if you were actually there?! Now on to the clothes…

Miley Cyrus in Vintage Dolce & Gabbana

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

I’ll be honest and say that for the most part I’ve been liking Miley’s style lately. She’s been looking young, fresh and fun (except for those horrible sweat-pant/jeans she wore a while ago). But I’m totally not into her look last night. It was vintage Dolce & Gabbana. It’s too bad because when it comes to vintage Dolce & Gabbana, there are thousands of looks she could’ve chosen that would have been way cooler than this. It’s just bad. As the legendary Michael K from Dlisted would say “What In The Hell Kind of GD Outfit Is This?!”

Katy Perry in Emanuel Ungaro

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

Perfect for the MTV Awards. If it looks familiar, it is – Coco Rocha wore a longer version of the dress to this year’s Met Ball. Yes, it’s maybe a little predictable when her new single is called “Roar” but it works. The side slit balances well with the long sleeves and the gold embellishments around the neckline add to the drama. It’s a good look on Katy. And love the gold and black Celine ankle strap shoes. The dress is from Emanuel Ungaro’s Fall 2013 collection, which I really liked. And I’m pleased the brand is coming back with Fausto Puglisi at the helm because the fashion house has a great legacy.

Lady Gaga in Prabal Gurung

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Red Carpet

I like when Lady Gaga tones down her look a bit but not sure it worked last night on the red carpet. Prabal Gurung is super talented but don’t think this dress was the best choice for this occasion. Maybe on someone else at a different event, it would have been really cool. But what’s with the really fake wig? It’s awful and distracting. But the tough thing with Gaga is you never know if it’s on purpose or not. In fact, it probably was and I’m just not sophisticated enough to get her brilliance.

Selena Gomez in Versace

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - ArrivalsAnother example of how Donatella just doesn’t have Gianni’s brilliance as a designer. If he designed this dress, it would have been better. Gianni knew how to stop just before it was too much. Donatella doesn’t have that skill. It’s good colour though. And Selena is a beautiful girl. Love the red lips and emerald jewelry.

Taylor Swift in Herve Leger

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

This is kind of a yawn for me. And Herve Leger seems so Kardishian now. I get Taylor Swift tries to be responsible when it comes to dressing for her fans and doesn’t ever do anything too sexy or over the top – which is cool – but it seems like she doesn’t have any fun when it comes to fashion. Like, loosen up a bit. Somehow I have a feeling that’s never going to happen.

Erin Wasson in Alexandre Vauthier Couture

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

Model Erin Wasson. Alexandre Vauthier Couture. MTV Awards. Why not? And how awesome would it have been if Taylor Swift showed up in this?! I’m giggling just thinking about it.

Get ready to see this hairstyle A LOT – like it or not

rBeyonceBob.mh.081913
iam.beyonce.com

Beyonce knows how to manage her brand. And girl knows how to make headlines – when she wants. So a few weeks ago she cut her hair into a pixie cut. The world gasped and all the celebrity and fashion sites and blogs were talking about it – “OMG, Beyonce cut her hair!!!” – and everyone of course wondered how a short hair cut would work when she’s performing. It was a fair question. Because we all know that her blowing-in-the-wind weave (of course it’s a weave – even though her hair dresser unwisely denied it and everyone rolled their eyes) is such a major part of her show and her dance routine (except when it gets caught in a fan – which was so awesome and incredibly cool how she handled it).

Anyways, clearly her pixie style wasn’t going to last so at her first concert after “the big cut”, she showed up with an inverted blond bob (if she doesn’t wear a weave then she’s like superwoman when it comes to growing hair). I like it. It suits her face and the colour is great on her. It may not be as dramatic at her show as her long flowing locks but it looks cool. I’m surprised no one’s really mentioned how much it looks like Victoria Beckham’s inverted bob a few years ago – the cut, colour, angle. It’ll be interesting to see how long Beyonce’s new look lasts but without a doubt this hairstyle is going to be majorly copied. Some will be good and some will be very, very unfortunate. Cross your fingers ladies who decide to go for this cut have a good stylist.

And if you’ve never seen it the video, check out Beyonce’s weave getting caught in a fan during her concert in Montreal. And how she amazingly doesn’t miss a beat while her people attempt to get it untangled.

Diane Kruger in Awesome Mary Katrantzou Dress

At the recent FOX Summer Party in LA, fashion risk taker Diane Kruger showed up in an incredible (a term I do not use lightly or often) digital and floral print Mary Katrantzou dress. From the label’s Resort 2014 collection (the designer’s first Resort collection), this is an important dress – and is going to be copied across the board. It’s chic, sexy and modern. I love the colour and print combination. The biased cut at the bottom is also cool, different and surprisingly flattering. As usual, Diane styled the dress perfectly as well. The loose tussled hair, pretty colour lips and ankle strap sandals all work together to pull the look off perfectly. With a dress like this, you don’t need much in terms of accessories so she was wise to keep the rest of the look simple. Once again, Diane nails it. The actress has super good taste – and a great stylist.

Fendi Baguette – Welcome Back My Friend

P00062343-BAGUETTE-SEQUIN-EMBELLISHED-SHOULDER-BAG-STANDARD
Fendi Baguette Bead & Sequin Shoulder Bag at saksfifthavenue.com

Recently, I’ve been noticing how Sarah Jessica Parker (and other fashion forward celebs, models and socialites) has been spotted around New York and London carrying various Fendi baguettes – which is cool considering Sex and the City was so influential in making the bag a household name in the first place. More than 10 years ago, the bag (often considered the first “it” bag) was heavily featured on the legendary show. Apparently Fendi was the first big name design house to loan Patricia Field items for the show. And it was a smart move. Because of the show’s growing popularity, the bag quickly became a must-have item for fashion lovers. And remember the super funny episode when Charlotte’s marriage was falling apart and she blurted out to the girls “My marriage is a fake Fendi!”.

So, when walking through the purse department recently in Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman in NYC (like any typical fashion loving fruit does), I quickly realized the former “it” bag is totally back and could soon be more popular than ever. It seemed to be the bag many super fashionable shoppers were after. Because of the intricacy and beading of some of the designs, the prices can get right up there and range anywhere from $1200 to over $5000. I found a more reasonably priced option on Barneys.com for $1,190. Also, I bet there are some great finds on second hand ones on numerous sites.

The Fendi Baguette is an iconic bag – it’s chic, a great size, and there are tons of different and creative designs – some wild and some a little more subtle. You can check out all the new designs on Fendi’s new site devoted solely to the baguette here. And get this – now you can even design your own. That’s fun and fancy.

Barneys Vintage Boutique – Fancy Classics

The small but chic space (photo from The Boutique 411)

While checking out the incredible accessories during a recent trip to Barneys in NYC, I was super excited to discover the recently opened Barneys Vintage Boutique, launched in November 2012. Still considered a bit of a well kept secret, the small space carries some legendary finds – like vintage Birkin, Kelly and Chanel bags, and some awesome & dramatic vintage jewelry from Chanel, YSL, Givenchy and Oscar de la Renta. There were some truly incredible pieces and ones that many fashion insiders would consider hugely sought after collector’s items. There’s just something special about stunning vintage pieces that never lose their stylish aesthetic decades after being originally produced.

And did I mention the prices?! I was shocked because they weren’t super high – or as high as you might think. I thought they were fair for the most part – especially considering the condition of the items, which was perfect. We’re talking jewelry pieces and bags that have rarely been worn (if ever in some cases) so they’re practically brand new.

Barneys Vintage Boutique can only be found at the Madison Avenue’s flagship location. Make sure to check it out next time you’re in New York – it’s a must.
