Rubaiyat in Calgary is hands down, without a doubt, no questions asked, one the best stores in Canada. The store itself is stunning and everything in it is totally awesome. Not only do they have one of the best selections of jewellery in the country, they also have an incredible collection of art glass, indoor and out door furnishings, wall art, pewter and, as my very fancy Nana used to say, “objet d’art” (works of art with artistic merit). The owners (Pam, David, Morgan and Crosby Haight) and all the staff are also totally lovely and super helpful. Continue reading “Rubaiyat at Christmas – A Fancy Holiday Shopping Spot”
American Music Awards: Gwen Stefani in Balmain – Perfect.
The most amazing blazer ever and she wears it better than the model did on the runway (Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear). And no one does the bleached blond hair and red lips like Gwen does. Also loved the way this is styled with the cross necklaces (a little reference to old school Madonna), leather pants and pointy toed stilettos.

Super Linda: She Looks SOOO Good
I haven’t written anything about Linda Evangelista yet on this blog but she was definitely a favourite in the 90s and she was for sure one of the original Supers and part of the Fab Five (Linda, Christy, Naomi, Cindy & Claudia). Linda was a true chameleon and easily one of the best models ever. She kept a pretty low profile for a while but luckily for me, we’ve been seeing a lot more of her lately doing some pretty great editorial work (like this spread for W Magazine in September) and attending a lot of parties (ones I dream of going to) in NY. Here she is with fellow 90s supermodel, the totally awesome Stella Tennant (both in Versace) at the opening of Versace’s new Soho store in October. Both gals were pretty frequent Versace models back in the day so it’s cool to see them still doing their thing – and doing it better than ever. Photo from style.com
And here’s Linda (in Chanel) at the Chanel Fine Jewellery party in NY last month. Everything about this look is perfect – the suit, the shoes, the hair, the bag. It’s very fancy. And is it just me or does Linda kind of look like Carol Alt here?

The Best Wool Coat Ever
I saw this coat the other day at Holts and immediately had to take a picture. It’s Burberry and is – clearly – the best black wool coat ever! It’s chic, glamorous and super fancy. It has a huge black fur collar, which is removable (but why remove a collar like this?!). It’s an awesome length, double breasted and would look good with everything – jeans, a suit, a fancy dress, a tight pencil skirt with super high heels, etc. You would have this coat for so many years and never get sick of it. And because it’s Burberry, it would be really well made and last a long time.
Damn, I love this coat!
Tine Fey Looking Good in Diane von Furstenberg
Tina Fey is one of the smartest and best comedians around. She’s so funny and clever and I’m sure going to miss 30 Rock when it ends this year. She doesn’t really play around with fashion too much, which is cool because it’s just who she is. But she looks really good here in Diane von Furstenberg the other night at the Apollo Circle Natural History Gala in NY. This is one of her best looks in a while. The dress is slightly sheer but not too much. And the cut is modern and super flattering. It would be really good paired with an edgy (and fancy) black leather jacket.

My New Favourite Bag – Givenchy Antigona Tote
Love Givenchy and their handbags are some of the best one can own. I saw this baby at Holts a little while ago. It’s so cool and beautiful and, well perfect. The fur is so soft and the red stripe down the middle is totally representative of Givenchy and the line’s originality. Love this bag! It would be cool with everything. Such a great Fall/Winter bag. Holts has a good selection of Givenchy bags and so does this Polyvore.com.
A Fancy Victoria Beckham Dress On Anne Hathaway
My friends and I have chatted a few times lately about how cool Victoria Beckham’s fashion line is. Who would’ve guessed that she, of all people, would have turned out to be a really good and talented designer? Her line is chic and modern. It’s also feminine yet still really cool. And love the zipper that appears on the back on many of her dresses. And yes, I’m aware that she probably doesn’t design many of the pieces but still – they’re good when most other celebrity line aren’t.
So here’s Anne Hathaway at the Women’s Media Awards in New York the other day. LOVE this dress. The collar detail is super cool and fresh. Way to make a simple black dress more interesting. And how flattering is it? So many women could wear this dress. You could dress it up more or leave it as simple as Anne does here. I maybe would’ve suggested cooler shoes – something with a super pointy toe and maybe an ankle strap. But still, this is a really good look. Also love Anne’s short hair. And notice the nail polish on her left index finder – it’s white while all the others are red. Is that hip? Or a little contrived? My first thought was hip so I’ll stick with that.

Awesome Trench Coats at Burberry Prorsum – Spring 2013 Ready-to-Wear
Now this is a cool coat. The blue and green metallics are beautiful and the colour variation is perfect. This would be cool over a black dress for cocktails or with jeans on the weekend for shopping…and then cocktails. I loved this whole collection actually. Christopher Bailey’s totally been nailing it with Burberry Prorsum the last few seasons and he continues to do some of the best outwear there is. I also loved that he moved away from the dark colours and metal spike details from previous seasons and into something bright and fresh for Spring 2013. The corsets and capes were pretty hot too.
My second favourite coat from the collection is below. The pink and red blended fabric is pretty damn perfect. And the cut is so chic. And I know a lot of ladies that would look very good in it.

Supers (Naomi, Carolyn, Carmen) Return to New York Fashion Week!
We’ve been seeing a lot more of our fave supermodels lately doing commercials and editorial work (Christy, Claudia, Cindy, Linda) but not many on the runway. So how freaked out and excited was I to see so many famous model faces at NYFW this year. It was awesome! Zac Posen’s show had the most famous models, opening with legendary Naomi Campbell, wearing a beautifully cut white and red flower dress, which was very feminine and pretty – it’s kind of funny he chose Naomi to wear something so girly and soft, because, well…she’s not. The show also featured famous faces from the last 10 years like (click on the names to see the photos) Karolina Kurkova, Coco Rhoca, Angela Lindvall, Alek Wek, Crystal Renn and Erin O’Connor. The girls were all a welcome addition to Zac’s show this year and NYFW in general.
I was also happy to see Caroline Murphy (love the dark red lipstick) at Jason Wu and Marchesa. And Carol Alt!!!!!, who likely hasn’t been on a runway in over 20 years and looked amazing at Marimekko. And one of the coolest and best runway comebacks was Carmen Dell’Orefice. At 81, she’s still super stunning and is SOOOOO fancy. Carmen walked the runway for Norisol Ferrari and Marimekko.
It was so cool to see all of these gals back doing runway work. Not only are they some of the best models ever but they don’t all look the same and they’re different ages. Maybe this is a sign that more designers are going to start moving away from the super skinny and vacant looking 16 year olds. I’m mean, who relates to that? Let’s get some more beautiful, fancy WOMEN back on the runways. It’s time.
I love this!

Gay Pride! And the Magenta Collection at Holts
I figure since it’s gay pride in Calgary this weekend, what better time to write about the limited edition Magenta Collection at Holts! For their 175th anniversary, Holts worked with some pretty awesome designers for some limited edition pieces that are exclusive to the store. Some of the items include Christian Louboutin heels (not my fave – a little much), Valentino heels (pretty), an Etro jersey top (cool on the right person but not a fan of jersey), a Smythe tuxedo blazer (love), an Alice + Olivia peplum dress (good price and they’ll sell tons), Manolo Blahniks (super good looking and a good buy), Jimmy Choos (OK but not the best), a Max Mara purse ($3,840 says it all), a Kate Spade tote (cute), Alexis Bittar bracelet and necklace set (too matchy but the bracelet is cool on its own) and many others.
Items for men (most likely fancy fruits) include really cool Naked & Famous jeans (want them), a Canali suit (good looking), a Paul Smith suit (cool), a Mackage wool coat and some fancy boxers.
Other items in the collection include nail polish, hand cream, coca-cola 6 pack (?), and chocolates – but $150 seems a bit much for truffles. Maybe it’s just me.
If you’re a big fan of Holts, some of the items are pretty cool and are a good buy.
Read more about it here and here.
Congrats on 175 years Holts
