I’ve been noticing a lot of pink (particularly fuchsia and hot pink) lately in stores and on the red carpet. It’s one of those hues that pops up in a big way every few years and it’s back big time this summer. And it’s nice to see its return because I’ve always thought pink is a happy colour (and pretty gay too). And when done well, it’s also feminine and chic. Pink is also a great compliment colour in that it works really well when paired with other colours, especially neutrals like black and white, or denim. Friends have always told me I’d love Galeries Lafayette in Paris. And my friends now me well. While in Paris for the first time recently, my lovely friend did her best showing me as much of Paris as possible in a just a few days. And on our last day we only had a few hours before we had to take to train back to Munich. She said we had enough time to either go up the Eiffel Tower or to Galeries Lafayette to shop. Rihanna received the style icon award earlier this week at the CFDA awards for her fearless approach to dressing. So what does one wear when being honoured for having no fear when it comes to style? Show up in a beaded and totally transparent gown, of course. And this wasn’t any kind of beaded gown. It was a custom, crystal-embellished fishnet dress (covered in over 200,000 Swarovski crystals) with matching 20s-inspired headpiece and gloves designed by young American designer Adam Selman (who happens to the partner of Rihanna’s long time stylist, Mel Ottenberg). Solid white looks are definitely growing in popularity and for good reason. The clean slate trend is fresh, light and cool. There’s a also soft simplicity about the look that’s feminine but modern at the same time. An all white look also works for many different occasions and various levels of dressiness. Even though I rarely pay attention to Jennifer Lopez’s music (does anyone?), I’m generally always pretty entertained by her videos. Because she does glamorous and sexy well. And she knows how to play it up. In her latest video, for her new single “First Love”, she stars alongside the biggest male model today, the super sexy David Gandy. She pretty much only wears a super tight white batting suit throughout the video – and she looks awesome. Of course, so does he. Now that the prestigious film festival has come to an end, it’s time to look back at some of the most memorable looks on the red carpet – and a few that weren’t totally unfortunate but could have been better. Sure, Cannes is totally over the top, flamboyant, extravagant and a little garish but it’s a great time to reflect on the red carpet fashions – the beautiful, the outrageous and the ‘are you serious?!?’ looks. As usual, the incomparable Cate Blanchett’s style couldn’t be matched. And Blake Lively also stepped up her style game with some red carpet fashion show stoppers (she definitely came to play). But it’s too bad about Nicole Kidman. At one time, she was the darling of Cannes and the one fashion lovers were the most exciting about seeing. Unfortunately, that feels like a while ago now.
