Cool (And Fancy) Bracelets for Men at MR PORTER

Balenciaga wrapped creased leather bracelet ($165)

I’ve long been a major fan of men’s bracelets – if fact I’ve been known to say “A man can never have too many plaid shirts – or bracelets.” And one my favourite new spots online to find new and cool ones is at MR PORTER – which is definitely one of the best men’s fashion sites out there. Not only do they have an incredible selection of clothing, shoes, accessories and gifts, they do some pretty cool editorial stuff as well with sections like “The Look” and “The Journal”. Their bracelet selection includes luxury brands like Balenciaga, Luis Morais, Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Bottega Veneta and more affordable ones like Folk and Miansai (of which I already have a couple and could for sure use a few more). And they do a great job in their description of each piece, including clothing suggestions on what you can pair each bracelet with.  Continue reading “Cool (And Fancy) Bracelets for Men at MR PORTER”

Fendi Baguette – Welcome Back My Friend

P00062343-BAGUETTE-SEQUIN-EMBELLISHED-SHOULDER-BAG-STANDARD
Fendi Baguette Bead & Sequin Shoulder Bag at saksfifthavenue.com

Recently, I’ve been noticing how Sarah Jessica Parker (and other fashion forward celebs, models and socialites) has been spotted around New York and London carrying various Fendi baguettes – which is cool considering Sex and the City was so influential in making the bag a household name in the first place. More than 10 years ago, the bag (often considered the first “it” bag) was heavily featured on the legendary show. Apparently Fendi was the first big name design house to loan Patricia Field items for the show. And it was a smart move. Because of the show’s growing popularity, the bag quickly became a must-have item for fashion lovers. And remember the super funny episode when Charlotte’s marriage was falling apart and she blurted out to the girls “My marriage is a fake Fendi!”.

So, when walking through the purse department recently in Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman in NYC (like any typical fashion loving fruit does), I quickly realized the former “it” bag is totally back and could soon be more popular than ever. It seemed to be the bag many super fashionable shoppers were after. Because of the intricacy and beading of some of the designs, the prices can get right up there and range anywhere from $1200 to over $5000. I found a more reasonably priced option on Barneys.com for $1,190. Also, I bet there are some great finds on second hand ones on numerous sites.

The Fendi Baguette is an iconic bag – it’s chic, a great size, and there are tons of different and creative designs – some wild and some a little more subtle. You can check out all the new designs on Fendi’s new site devoted solely to the baguette here. And get this – now you can even design your own. That’s fun and fancy.

Chandally Jewelry – A New Fave

“Shalosh” organic cuff – 18k vermeil & blue sapphires ($740)

I always insist on checking out Henri Bendel, one of my favourite spots to look at cool jewelry, when I’m in NYC. They often have awesome truck shows with really cool and talented jewelry designers. And during my recent visit a couple of weeks ago I met a lovely jeweler named Sharon Chandally. I was super impressed with her line – the detail, the craftsmanship and originality. It’s interesting and chic, while still being soft and wearable.

Sharon comes from a long line of silversmiths and you can tell – creating jewelry is in her blood. She sculpted as a teenager and then studied both industrial design and musical instrument construction at university and the skills she learned are definitely apparent in her work. It’s organic with an architectural element that makes it especially original. Having been trained in an ancient forms of silversmithing and finding influence from her travels to places like Israel, New Zealand, India, Ghana, Benin and Japan, Sharon creates jewelry pieces that are practically sculptures.

Her materials include 18K vermeil and sterling silver with stones such as black diamonds and sapphires. I’ve posted three of my favourite pieces here but definitely check out her site to see more of her super interesting designs (I’m totally am getting a ring). This is impressive work and I’m looking forward to following Chandally as her line grows and to see her future creations.

As many times as I’ve been to New York, and even though I’ve been meaning to go for years, last month was the first time I’ve ever taken the time to check out Jeffery – a very cool, chic and unique store on West 14th in the Meatpacking District. Carrying clothes for both men and women, Jeffrey has a pretty incredible collection of designer clothes and accessories – you will for sure see some pretty unforgettable shoes, bags and jewelry pieces. And most of the staff seemed friendly and attentive.  Continue reading “Jeffrey New York”

Fancy Jewels at Henri Bendel

Jewellery is a major passion of mine and I can’t not go to NYC without making a trip to Henri Bendel – a lengendary store with an incredible jewellery selection. Featuring lines from both long established jewellery designers and some of the most exciting new ones in the North America. And most of the prices are totally reasonable. Man, I love this store! I can easily spend a couple of hours looking in great detail at the huge selection of super cool pieces. And luckily for my mom and sister, I always pick them up something when I’m there because I’m a saint (actually they always give me $ to shop for them before I go). If you’re not heading to NYC anytime soon, you can also shop at Henri Bendel online. The site doesn’t have nearly as much as they do in the store, but they still have a lot of really cool pieces. Here are some of my faves.

Julianne Moore, Elizabeth Taylor and Famous Jewels

The other night, the lovely and talented Julianne Moore attended a pre-Oscar party, Bvlgari’s Celebration of Elizabeth Taylor’s Collection at Bvlgari Beverly Hills, and was the lucky one chosen to wear Taylor’s very famous and incomparable emerald and diamond necklace. Elizabeth was given the necklace along with a ring, earrings and bracelet (referred at the time as the Grand Duchess Vladimir Suite – how fancy is that?!) by Richard Burton in 1963. Purchased at Bvlgari in Rome, she wore the necklace to events around the world and to the Oscars in 1967, when she was named Best Actress for her role in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf (good movie). What’s super cool about the necklace is you can detach the pendant and it can be worn separately as a broach – which Taylor did often. Bvlgari jewellery experts purchased the necklace at a Christie’s auction in 2011 for more than $6.1 million (no big deal).

Now back to Julianne. Obviously, she is so cool and has incredibly good style – and I hate to say it – but this look was pretty disappointing. Wearing a simple strapless  Alexander McQueen coral dress and nude pointy toe shoes with the legendary necklace just didn’t work – like super underwhelming. Sometimes when I don’t like a look on the red carpet or at a party I can at least see what the person was going for. But not this time. The outfit itself is lovely but it sure doesn’t do the famous necklace any justice. It looks like she wondered into Bvlgari on a Saturday after lunch with her friends and a salesperson let her try on the necklace for fun. I’m not saying she should have worn it with some crazy elaborate dress but at least in something with a bit of drama that had a luxurious vibe to it to go along with the necklace. And with emeralds, dark red lips are a must. Can you imagine if she wore it with this beautiful Tom Ford outfit (Fall 2012 – awesome collection)? It would’ve made way more sense.

Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Taylor & Chandelier Earrings

Nicole

Last night I was out with my friends and I somehow (wisely) managed to bring up the earrings Nicole Kidman wore to the MET Gala in 2003 – the year she co-hosted with Anna Wintour & Tom Ford. The amazing dress was custom Tom Ford for Gucci (such a legendary time for Gucci) and she wore these incredible long diamond chandelier earrings. I remember being so excited when I first saw a photo of her in those earrings – they’re legendary. Nicole was on top of the world back then. And this was totally one of her best looks.

Side note – I sure hope someone wears earrings like this to the Oscars. They’re so awesome. In fact, I think Anne Hathaway’s look at the Golden Globes would have been way better if she wore earrings like these. They’re even better up close.

Earrings

And here’s an interesting jewelry fact. Do you know where the term chandelier earrings came from? The legendary Elizabeth Taylor of course! She had a pair of long diamond tassel earrings (pictured below) that were originally owned by Baroness di Portanova, who commissioned Costantino Bulgari’s daughter Marina B. to create them based on a chandelier in her Acapulco home (doesn’t get much fancier than that, does it?). When Elizabeth heard the story, she started to refer to that style of earrings as chandeliers. And the rest is jewelry history my friends.

David Webb – Fancy Jewels

I love nice jewellery and recently discovered iconic jeweller David Webb’s line and I’m so into it. It’s amazing – like really, really good looking. The line is known for its craftsmanship, creativity and specializing in special order pieces made of huge incredible gemstones, enamel, 18kt gold, platinum and diamonds.

5DavidWebb

Based out of NYC, David’s was long considered the go-to jeweller in Manhattan. He made custom pieces for some of the legendary jewel connoisseurs ever including Elizabeth Taylor, The Duchess of Windsor and Princess Grace. David passed away in 1975 but with new owners, the jewellery company he established long ago is still thriving as well as his legacy. The latest ad campaign with Terry Richardson is pretty cool too.

This is jewellery at its finest and fanciest. Prices range in the 1000’s to 10,000’s and I’m sure there are many special order pieces that go far beyond that. A great example of how jewellery is such an incredible art form.

Rubaiyat at Christmas – A Fancy Holiday Shopping Spot

162
Rubaiyat in Calgary is hands down, without a doubt, no questions asked, one the best stores in Canada. The store itself is stunning and everything in it is totally awesome. Not only do they have one of the best selections of jewellery in the country, they also have an incredible collection of art glass, indoor and out door furnishings, wall art, pewter and, as my very fancy Nana used to say, “objet d’art” (works of art with artistic merit). The owners (Pam, David, Morgan and Crosby Haight) and all the staff are also totally lovely and super helpful.  Continue reading “Rubaiyat at Christmas – A Fancy Holiday Shopping Spot”

The Room at the Bay is SO FANCY

A few friends have told me about The Room at the Bay on Queen Street in Toronto and how great it is but I had no idea – none – that it was that good. The extent they’ve gone to carry some of the best fashion brands in the world is super impressive. Brands like Giambattista ValliRodarteChristopher KaneErdemBalmainProenza SchoulerMathew WilliamsonMoschino and Azzedine Alaïa. These brands are not only some of the best and most sought after brands by true fashion people but many of them aren’t especially easy to come by in Canada. The merchandising was also well done and I loved the way the mannequins were  styled. And they had some awesome jewelry. The whole place was pretty chic. So different than any other Bay. Like really, really nice. Luckily for shoppers in Vancouver, The Room opened there in the fall of 2011 and is one is also set to open in Montreal soon. For dudes like me, let’s hope Calgary is next.

Check out the designers listed above. Their sites are damn cool.
