Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Taylor & Chandelier Earrings

Nicole

Last night I was out with my friends and I somehow (wisely) managed to bring up the earrings Nicole Kidman wore to the MET Gala in 2003 – the year she co-hosted with Anna Wintour & Tom Ford. The amazing dress was custom Tom Ford for Gucci (such a legendary time for Gucci) and she wore these incredible long diamond chandelier earrings. I remember being so excited when I first saw a photo of her in those earrings – they’re legendary. Nicole was on top of the world back then. And this was totally one of her best looks.

Side note – I sure hope someone wears earrings like this to the Oscars. They’re so awesome. In fact, I think Anne Hathaway’s look at the Golden Globes would have been way better if she wore earrings like these. They’re even better up close.

Earrings

And here’s an interesting jewelry fact. Do you know where the term chandelier earrings came from? The legendary Elizabeth Taylor of course! She had a pair of long diamond tassel earrings (pictured below) that were originally owned by Baroness di Portanova, who commissioned Costantino Bulgari’s daughter Marina B. to create them based on a chandelier in her Acapulco home (doesn’t get much fancier than that, does it?). When Elizabeth heard the story, she started to refer to that style of earrings as chandeliers. And the rest is jewelry history my friends.

Golden Globes – Fancy Dresses & Funny Ladies

Tina Fey in Custom L’Wren Scott & Amy Poehler in Stella McCartney

Tina

The best award show hosts in a very long time! They completely nailed it. People were cracking up every time they were on stage – such fantastic comedic timing together. As hosts, they were charming, clever and hilarious. I just wish they were on more of it. Tina and Amy both looked awesome as well. Pretty dress on Tina and Amy sure rocks a sexy Stella McCartney tuxedo. Well done ladies. I sure hope they host again next year.

Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen

Kate Hudson

My favourite – love this whole look. Super glamorous and so sexy. The black and gold dress was definitely one of the most unique of the night and fit the actress perfectly.  So striking. The gold leaf embellishment on the belt and the gold collar detail is so great. And the plunging keyhole neckline isn’t too much because of the long sleeves and there’s no slit. A lot of people on Twitter said she looked like Goldie Hawn’s character in Overboard – which is awesome!

Julianne Moore in Custom Tom Ford

Julianne

Second favourite. A super good looking back and white streamlined dress made especially for her. Very architectural and sleek. She said she needed a dress so she called Tom herself and asked him to make her one. Love the open back and the way the white is incorporated into the dress. Her accessories are also perfect – super sexy shoes and love the Bulgari chandelier earrings and the snake wrap bracelet is amazing and probably very, very expensive.

Anne Hathaway in Chanel Haute Couture

Anne

When I first saw this I thought it was simple and pretty. Love her short hair and I even kind of liked how simple her accessories were (small diamond studs). But then as I continued to see her through the night, I thought it was too simple – like a little boring. I’m sure she’s holding back and will plan something major for the Oscars.

Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad Haute Couture

Jlo

We’ve totally seen her in this look before – like at the 2011 American Music Awards. And Jennifer Lopez is for sure the girl who would wear white to her friend’s wedding. It wasn’t her year to stand out or shine but she sure tried. And the sheer fabric looked liked something you’d see on Dancing with the Stars. Or on a figure skater. And I think she needed red lipstick. Not one of her better looks.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

Jennifer

I love what Raf Simons has been doing at Dior but I’m not sure about this one. It’s odd around the boobs and not very flattering. I get the 50’s reference but don’t think it’s working on Jennifer Lawrence (who seems pretty funny and down to earth). It was a cool belt though. The belt on Marion Cotillard’s dress (also Dior Haute Couture) looked like the same one.

Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera

Lucy

This was definitely one the dresses people loved or hated. And she knew it was going to be a statement dress. I didn’t like it – it looked like fabric on a couch in a Park Avenue apartment in 1978. But I heard it was really beautiful in person. And the pockets were cool.

Sienna Miller in Custom Erdem

SiennaLeave it to Sienna to wear something like this 60’s inspired creation. Erdem is a really cool line and known for elaborate fabrics and patters. And Sienna is known for being fashion forward and doing her own thing but this one just doesn’t work. The floral embroidery is odd and it’s not flattering. It’s also not a good colour on her. She’s a beautiful girl but this seemed more like a costume. And it didn’t hang nicely when she was on the carpet. Next time Sienna.

David Webb – Fancy Jewels

I love nice jewellery and recently discovered iconic jeweller David Webb’s line and I’m so into it. It’s amazing – like really, really good looking. The line is known for its craftsmanship, creativity and specializing in special order pieces made of huge incredible gemstones, enamel, 18kt gold, platinum and diamonds.

Based out of NYC, David’s was long considered the go-to jeweller in Manhattan. He made custom pieces for some of the legendary jewel connoisseurs ever including Elizabeth Taylor, The Duchess of Windsor and Princess Grace. David passed away in 1975 but with new owners, the jewellery company he established long ago is still thriving as well as his legacy. The latest ad campaign with Terry Richardson is pretty cool too.

This is jewellery at its finest and fanciest. Prices range in the 1000’s to 10,000’s and I’m sure there are many special order pieces that go far beyond that. A great example of how jewellery is such an incredible art form.

Ann Hathaway, Saint Laurent & Givenchy

Ann wisely chose an awesome black Saint Laurent tux to wear at the National Board of Review party the other night. Love this look – it’s sexy and super good looking. The fit is perfect – skinny pants, a tailored jacket and a really pretty black ruffled blouse with a huge bow (check out the detail on the sleeves). Good shoes too – the Givenchy ankle-strap sandals are some of my faves and these were apparently made just for her because they’re vegan. That’s pretty fancy.

Ann’s been rocking the red carpet lately in some unpredictable choices. Can’t wait to see what she wears to the Golden Globes this Sunday.

Ladies in Red

Red isn’t the easiest colour to wear but when done well, it can be a great look. Here are two very different red looks and both ladies wear the colour well.

First, Gwen Stefani in a super cool red plaid coat with her signature red lips. I’ll never get sick of this lip colour on Gwen – it works so well on her. And this is such a good looking coat. It’s casual but still structured and chic. Love the sunglasses too. Could she look any cooler walking around London? Even the guy behind her thinks so.

And now Helen Mirren in a long red Escada dress. Such an elegant dress – and the fit is super flattering. Also like the sheer long sleeves and the draping on the front. She looks so fancy. It almost looks like something Joan Collins would’ve worn on Dynasty – and I mean that in a good way. Helen’s 67 and she couldn’t look better. She also looks like herself – she hasn’t changed her face and she’s allowed herself to age – and is beautiful and sexy because of it. You can tell she’s confident in this dress and she should be. She owns it.

Some Favourite 2012 Red Carpet Looks

Now that it’s the new year and award season is quickly upon us, I figured it was a good time to look back on some of my favourite red carpet looks in 2012. Here it goes:

022612-Gwyneth-Paltrow-350

#1: Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford at the Oscars. Not only will this go down as one of the best looks of 2012, it will for sure go down as one of the best looks in Oscar history. She totally nails it with the long & sleek look. The cape is awesome and super dramatic. The accessories also worked really well – love the diamond cuff. Gwyneth’s best look ever.

jane_fonda_cannes_a_p

#2: Jane Fonda in Stella McCartney at Cannes. At 73, Jane’s never looked more amazing. And she totally rocked this Stella McCartney optical illusion dress. Love the long emerald earrings as well – very flattering. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Jane on the red carpet this year.

#3: Diane Kruger in Vivienne Westwood at Cannes. I thought this was the best dress at Cannes this year. Such a good colour and the fit is perfect on her. So glamorous and sexy. Love the minimal accessories as well. You don’t need much with a dress like this.

#4: Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen at TIFF. Such a good look for Kate. Very modern and sexy. The super high slit works so well because of the long sleeves. And love the split in the middle with the sparkles. This is a really good looking dress. And her hair and make-up look awesome too. But I would have picked different shoes.

#5: Charlize Theron in Christian Dior at Snow White and the Huntsman premiere. Totally stunning. The way the dress is constructed and flows as she moves is so beautiful. It’s obviously not for everyone and is pretty dramatic but I think this dress could for sure be in a museum. And she’s styled perfectly as well – the hair, shoes, jewels, make-up. This is fashion.

Fancy Plaid

chanel_009_1366.450x675

On December 4, Karl Lagerfeld held the Pre-Fall Chanel 2013 collection in Scotland. Karl’s known for his elaborate presentations, and the venue for this collection was especially cool – Linlithgow Palace outside of Edinburgh. The inspiration for the collection was the time that Coco spent in Scotland with her lover the Duke of Westminster.

This was a pretty different collection from what we’ve seen of Chanel lately. Tons of plaid, knits and heavy scarves. But also full of references to old school British monarchy – the billowing sleeves, super high neck blouses and the beautiful long white coats and dresses that ended the show. Especially loved the white cotton blouses tied in a bow around the neck with the broach pinned in the middle. And the berets were pretty cool too.

I’m a big lover of plaid – it just never gets old. Glad Karl feels the same way.

The collection also featured Brand Kroenig and his son Hudson. The kid is four years old and this is his third Chanel show! How lucky is he?

Dean Davidson Trunk Show at Holts

Sliced CuffMy good buddy Dean Davidson is having a truck show at Holts during December. And I was supper flattered that he asked me to go and represent the line and talk about the pieces yesterday. It was fun to chat with all the jewellery sales associates about the specifics of the line and talk about every piece in detail. It was awesome – I felt like I was totally in my element. Dean’s line is modern, dramatic and super good looking. His latest collection was influenced by his love of architecture. All the pieces are a soft brushed metal, which is Dean’s signature. The shapes are clean, linear and super flattering. Continue reading “Dean Davidson Trunk Show at Holts”
