Statement Earrings from the Early 90s – “They’re baaaack”

Linda
Linda Evangelista by Francesco Scavullo for Versace, 1990

Back in the late 80s and early 90s, big statement earrings were huge (no pun intended). And no one did it better than legendary supermodel Linda Evangelista. When I was little, I used to go to a store in Calgary called White Sun in Mount Royal Village with my mother. And while she shopped, I would stay with the sales ladies at the jewelry counter and happily go through all the new gigantic earrings. When new stock came in, we used to play a game where they would ask me to pick my favourite earrings and which ones I thought were the most expensive – I was always right: “he did it again!” It’s been a while since the look has been super popular and I think we’re going to see a lot more huge earrings this year.

Cool & Fancy Collar Necklaces

I’ve always loved collar necklaces. They’re like the perfect combination of fancy, chic and modern. There’s also something timeless about them. Back in the 80s, my mom used to have a few of them and I clearly remember giving them special space when I reorganized her jewellery drawers when I was younger (yes, I actually did that and not because she asked me to, I asked her if I could – while other boys were outside playing street hockey, I was happily organizing my mother’s jewellery).

Fancy Sweatshirts for 2014

B&G
Beyoncé in Givenchy in NYC

Fancy sweatshirts were for sure one of the biggest trends in 2013. We saw them frequently on stars like Beyoncé and Rihanna, and they were prominently featured on the runways for Spring ready-to-wear 2014 (Marc Jacobs, Libertine, Aalexander Wang, Mary Katrantzou and Antonio Berardi), which means we’ll be seeing a lot more of them in 2014. There are endless possibilities for this look and the prices definitely range from reasonable to completely outrageous. Beyoncé’s incredible Givenchy printed sweatshirt with sequin sleeves retailed for $2,395 but it’s no longer available. Can you imagine paying $2,400 for a sweatshirt?! Not a concern for Beyoncé.

Lenny Kravitz Rocks Fancy Shiny Blazer

lenny-kravitz-435
Lenny Kravitz has a crazy good sense of style. Throughout he’s career, he’s often worn pieces that might be considered pretty feminine (remember the boas from his “Mama Said” days?) but he wears them with confidence and rocks them like a true rock star should. And the same can be said of this incredibly cool shiny black metallic blazer. It’s fancy and super awesome. Like, could a blazer be any cooler? Not every guy would wear I blazer like this but when you see how good it looks on Kravitz, why not? It’s progressive and super stylish. And of course, Lenny keeps it hip and edgy. This particular blazer is Saint Laurent and I can’t find it online but according to the price of other Saint Laurent blazers, I’m guessing it’s at least $2,500. But it isn’t necessary to spend that much to achieve a similar look. Continue reading “Lenny Kravitz Rocks Fancy Shiny Blazer”

Fancy Fenton Earrings – Perfect for Parties

Picture2

Fancy earrings are a great way to dress up any outfit and they’re perfect for adding some drama to any party look. While browsing through Barneys.com this week (I’m always on the hunt for cool & fancy jewels) I discovered a jewellery line called Fenton. And since party season is fast approaching, I’m sure glad I did. The line is glamorous, shiny and cool. Designer Dana Lorenz started Fenton in 2006 after working for some major design houses like Gucci and Donna Karan. Her designs quickly grew a following and she now sells her work in prestigious stores like Barneys and Collette. Made of crystals and brass (which keeps the cost down), her designs are glamorous statement pieces that are sure to get noticed. After the success of Fenton, Lorenz started another jewellery line called Fallon, a slightly lower priced collection with a bit more of an edge.  Continue reading “Fancy Fenton Earrings – Perfect for Parties”

Fancy Flats

Valentino ‘Rockstud’ ballerina flats at shop.nordstrom.com ($760)

I’ve always been a sucker for good heels but a cool pair of flats can be pretty chic too. Lately I’ve been seeing them more and more on well dressed women and celebs. There are some great pointed-toe flats and oxfords (and some interesting combinations of both styles) available right know. And when paired with the right outfit, they can have every bit of an impact as a stylish pair of heels. Pointed-toe flats look chic with jeans, skinny pants or a pencil skirt. If you’re in for a splurge, Valentino’s Rockstud ballerina flats (above) are especially striking. The other day, I saw a fashionable lady downtown wearing them with a well cut skirt and a loose sleeveless blouse and thought it was very ‘work chic’). A cool pair of oxfords also looks hip with everything from a suit to a favourite pair of skinny jeans.  Continue reading “Fancy Flats”

Sandra Bullock – Cool & Sexy in Black Leather Pencil Skirt

Sandra+Bullock+Gravity+Screening+Sherman+Oaks+E0wdv4GshUal (1)

At 49, Sandra Bullock’s looking better than ever lately. She looks confident, healthy and happy – proving that being almost 50 is awesome. She’s also been nailing every one of her red carpet looks while doing press for Gravity over the last couple months. Late last week she attended a Q&A session for her hit movie rocking a black leather pencil skirt, a chic black top with lace sleeves and a pair of black pointy toe stilettos. It’s a simple, good-looking outfit.  Continue reading “Sandra Bullock – Cool & Sexy in Black Leather Pencil Skirt”

Alexis Bittar Gets Fancy With Fine Jewelry Collection

Alexis-Bittar-Launches-Fine-Jewelry-Pictures

I’ve been a fan of Alexis Bittar’s for quite a few years now. His designs are cool, different and a reasonable price range. The New York based designer experienced a huge surge in popularity years ago after his jewelry was often featured on Sex and the City. Holt Renfrew has a big selection of his work and you can easily find it on many shopping sites like saksfifthavenue.com, neimanmarcus.com and nordstrom.com. You can even purchase directly from alexisbittar.com. Bittar also now has stores in Manhattan, Connecticut, West Hollywood, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. His flagship stores are the best places to get his work because they carry editorial pieces that can’t be found online or in other boutiques or department stores.  Continue reading “Alexis Bittar Gets Fancy With Fine Jewelry Collection”

Hip and Fancy Cat-Eye Sunglasses

Elizabeth and James cat-eye sunglasses ($289)

Cat-eye sunglasses are super hot right now. There’s just something intrinsically fancy about them. Although they may seem a little out there for many women, they’re actually super flattering. The angle of the outer edge elevates the eyes. There’s also a timeless quality to them. Although the shape first became popular in the 1950s, there’s a new take on look. And the current design is a cool dichotomy because it’s both modern and vintage looking at the same time. Elizabeth and James (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s design studio) has some of the coolest cat- eye glasses available right now. They have numerous shapes and colours of the style but I especially love the round cut-out lens option above. Tom Ford and Prada also nail the look. And Marc by Marc Jacobs does a solid (and more affordable) version as well.  Continue reading “Hip and Fancy Cat-Eye Sunglasses”

Fancy LOTW: Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham

341x560

Beckham has achieved pretty impressive (not to mention surprising) success as a fashion designer. And for good reason. She’s good. Really good. And she obviously designs with herself in mind. While attending the 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Event at the Chateau Marmont earlier this week, she wore a super cool sheer blouse accented with interesting black panels paired a well cut short black skirt both from her Spring 2014 collection – which I loved. The opened toed shoes are also from the collection and were shown with the same blouse on the runway. This is a good look. It’s modern and sexy but still feminine. Her hair also looks great pulled back and the gladiators with gradient lenses are the perfect accessory for the simple and chic look.  Continue reading “Fancy LOTW: Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham”
