Some Favourite and Fancy 2013 Red Carpet Looks

Best dresses

As the year comes to end, it’s time to reflect on the many fancy red carpet looks we saw throughout the year. There was everything from simplicity to all out glamour, from ready-to-wear to couture. I don’t have one ultimate favourite look of the year but I’ve included some of my top choices below (in no particular order). And of course I had to include Cindy Crawford. Because, well…d’uh. Here’s to a happy, safe and fancy 2014. Happy New Year!  Continue reading “Some Favourite and Fancy 2013 Red Carpet Looks”

Beyonce Shines in Tom Ford in NYC

beyonce-435To end the year off on high note, Beyonce blew everyone away and surprised fans and critics by releasing her fifth studio album on iTunes at midnight on December 13. The superstar’s self-titled album impressively sold 991,000 copies in its first 10 days of release, without any promotion. At her album’s release party last week in NYC, she rocked a fractured mirror Tom Ford dress and matching thigh high boots from Ford’s Spring 2014 collection. A perfect choice for her first major appearance since the album’s release and subsequent huge success. It’s super sexy, glamorous and expensive – all qualities Beyonce seems to be drawn to and ones Ford often considers in his legendary designs. I loved this collection when I first saw it (read my thoughts here) because Tom was back on track. And I also figured that many of the designs were created specifically with superstars like Beyonce and Rihanna in mind. The fractured mirror dresses are pretty much made for brave and confident stars to rock on the red carpet (kudos to Julianne Moore for being the first to wear a similar dress from Ford’s spring collection at the CFDA and Vogue 2013 Fashion Fund Finalists event in November, image below). Cowboys and Controversy at Chanel’s Pre-Fall Show in Dallas

Chanel_010_1366.450x675

Last year, it was fancy plaid at a castle in Edinburgh. And for this year’s Pre-Fall show (a couple of weeks ago), Karl Lagerfeld chose to show in Dallas, apparently as a thank you to Texas-based Neiman Marcus for supporting the fashion house after WWII. It was an American and western inspired collection presented in a barn-like setting reminiscent of a vintage rodeo. The collection consisted of pieces resembling fancy cowboys and cowgirls, but also included Native American inspired headdresses, which proved to be somewhat controversial. Chanel later released a statement saying that the collection was a tribute to the cultures that are such an important part of Texas history and apologized if it offended anyone.  Continue reading “Cowboys and Controversy at Chanel’s Pre-Fall Show in Dallas”

Lenny Kravitz Rocks Fancy Shiny Blazer

lenny-kravitz-435
Lenny Kravitz has a crazy good sense of style. Throughout he’s career, he’s often worn pieces that might be considered pretty feminine (remember the boas from his “Mama Said” days?) but he wears them with confidence and rocks them like a true rock star should. And the same can be said of this incredibly cool shiny black metallic blazer. It’s fancy and super awesome. Like, could a blazer be any cooler? Not every guy would wear I blazer like this but when you see how good it looks on Kravitz, why not? It’s progressive and super stylish. And of course, Lenny keeps it hip and edgy. This particular blazer is Saint Laurent and I can’t find it online but according to the price of other Saint Laurent blazers, I’m guessing it’s at least $2,500. But it isn’t necessary to spend that much to achieve a similar look. Continue reading “Lenny Kravitz Rocks Fancy Shiny Blazer”

Sequins Done Well vs. Not So Much

Picture4

Sequins are as popular now as ever and the look works especially well for the holiday party season. But with sequins, it’s important not too over do it. Because sequins are already a little over the top, you should generally keep the skin baring/cleavage showing to a minimum. Here’s a perfect example. Olivia Palermo in a Whistles top and skirt (love this look) vs. Carmen Electra in a Saint Laurent dress (can you believe this is Saint Laurent?!?). Palermo’s look (what does she do anyways?) works well because of the long sleeves and neckline. It’s an outfit you’d for sure notice from across the room (at least I totally would) and it’s chic but not too sexy. And because of the sequins, it doesn’t need to be.  Continue reading “Sequins Done Well vs. Not So Much”

Kate Moss Is Fancy In Playboy & The Gays Will Love It

The photos from the highly anticipated 60 anniversary issue of Playboy featuring Kate Moss have finally hit the web and they don’t disappoint – the photos are chic, sexy and cool. Shot by well respected photographers Mert & Marcus, Moss wears the iconic Playboy bunny costume like no one has before. When it was first announced that Moss would pose for the special anniversary issue, some insiders were surprised but it was obvious that the highly buzzed about shoot would be of higher quality than what’s typically depicted in the long standing men’s magazine. And not surprisingly, the layout has an artistic quality that we’ve come to expect from fashion shoots involving the legendary supermodel.  Continue reading “Kate Moss Is Fancy In Playboy & The Gays Will Love It”

Fancy Fenton Earrings – Perfect for Parties

Picture2

Fancy earrings are a great way to dress up any outfit and they’re perfect for adding some drama to any party look. While browsing through Barneys.com this week (I’m always on the hunt for cool & fancy jewels) I discovered a jewellery line called Fenton. And since party season is fast approaching, I’m sure glad I did. The line is glamorous, shiny and cool. Designer Dana Lorenz started Fenton in 2006 after working for some major design houses like Gucci and Donna Karan. Her designs quickly grew a following and she now sells her work in prestigious stores like Barneys and Collette. Made of crystals and brass (which keeps the cost down), her designs are glamorous statement pieces that are sure to get noticed. After the success of Fenton, Lorenz started another jewellery line called Fallon, a slightly lower priced collection with a bit more of an edge.  Continue reading “Fancy Fenton Earrings – Perfect for Parties”

Angelina Stuns Again in Atelier Versace

angelina-jolie-435

Angelina was recently honoured for her endless global philanthropic work at the Governor Awards in LA. And once again, she looked totally stunning on the red carpet. Not a shocker that she wore black or that it was Atelier Versace, which seems to be her go-to designer now for major red carpet events. And I think the sheer lace gown with crystal beading was a nice choice. It’s lovely, elegant and somewhat demure (not a word often associated with Versace). It suits her, fits perfectly and I’m sure moved beautifully as she moved down the red carpet and walked across the stage. The simple hair and minimal accessories completed her look. Clearly, Angelina’s Atelier Versace gowns are made especially with her in mind because they’re not the over-the-top, loud and revealing dresses we’ve come to typically expect from Donatella.  Continue reading “Angelina Stuns Again in Atelier Versace”

Fancy Flats

Valentino ‘Rockstud’ ballerina flats at shop.nordstrom.com ($760)

I’ve always been a sucker for good heels but a cool pair of flats can be pretty chic too. Lately I’ve been seeing them more and more on well dressed women and celebs. There are some great pointed-toe flats and oxfords (and some interesting combinations of both styles) available right know. And when paired with the right outfit, they can have every bit of an impact as a stylish pair of heels. Pointed-toe flats look chic with jeans, skinny pants or a pencil skirt. If you’re in for a splurge, Valentino’s Rockstud ballerina flats (above) are especially striking. The other day, I saw a fashionable lady downtown wearing them with a well cut skirt and a loose sleeveless blouse and thought it was very ‘work chic’). A cool pair of oxfords also looks hip with everything from a suit to a favourite pair of skinny jeans.  Continue reading “Fancy Flats”

Fancy LOTW: Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham and Fancy Earrings

rs_634x1024-131114133537-634.victoria-beckham-bambi-awards-germany-111413

Over the last few years, Beckham has turned herself into a bonafide style icon. She’s become a talented and well respected designer and she dresses the part. Her clothes are often spotted on Hollywood and fashion elite. Lately, I pretty much love everything Beckham wears. Last week she was honoured at the Bambi Awards in Germany for her fashion designs wearing an expensive looking and well cut sleeveless black dress from her signature collection. This is a chic dress. The deep V neck is sexy but the length keeps it from being too revealing. And you can tell that the tailoring is impeccable. There’s nothing trendy about a dress like this one. It’s elegant, fancy and timeless – a good wardrobe staple that can be worn over the years to numerous different events. Just change it up with the accessories. Speaking of which, Beckham accessorized the dress perfectly with some incredible diamond and emerald Chopard drop earrings and a diamond link bracelet. I’m a sucker for long fancy earrings.  Continue reading “Fancy LOTW: Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham and Fancy Earrings”
